br. «Delacroix è decisamente il pittore più originale del passato e dell'era moderna. È proprio così, che possiamo farci? Nessuno dei suoi amici, persino i più entusiasti, ha osato proclamarlo con la nostra impudica sincerità. Grazie alla giustizia tardiva del tempo che smorza rancori, stupefazioni e cattive volontà, togliendo lentamente di mezzo con la morte ogni ostacolo, oggi non ci troviamo più a vivere nell'epoca in cui gli "artisti retrogradi" si facevano il segno della croce al nome di Delacroix, nome che, del resto, costituiva un segno di riconoscimento per tutti i suoi oppositori, intelligenti e sciocchi. Quel "tempo delizioso" è ormai trascorso. Ma Delacroix verrà sempre contestato, almeno quanto basta ad aggiungere lampi alla sua aureola. Meglio così! Ha il diritto di restare sempre giovane; infatti, lui non ci ha ingannato, non ci ha mentito come hanno fatto certi idoli ingrati accolti nei nostri panteon. Delacroix non fa ancora parte dell'Accademia, pur troneggiandovi moralmente; ormai da molti anni ha già detto tutto, proprio tutto quello che è indispensabile per primeggiare - ne conveniamo; e - prodigiosa impresa di un genio sempre alla ricerca del nuovo - non gli rimane che progredire sulla retta via - là dove si è sempre mantenuto».
