All items for various 1884 dates; 5 are from Oppenheimer & Co. Job Printers publishers of "Long Island Central Zeitung" and "Long Island Reporter" from March to November of 1884 for printing hundreds and one order for a 1000 invitations dancing orders programs; on the printers' business letterhead 4th Ave between 17th & 18th streets in NYC. with 2 receipts handwritten addressed to the Club for purchases of a tambourine a play sheet music a "book for Sec.' & for Treas. and for a ".piece of Music We'll raise dat roof to night" paid by W.A. Mangler. The Club also purchased a "false face & Postage" another tambourine "burnt cork"; 2 boxes of powder a play "Who's the Actor" and groups of music; these 3 small receipts all signed for by stage manager G.A.S. Weiner. Also including a generic "Receipt" for music furnished to the club by Chas. Bollen and the club paid Geo. B. Plitt for "one syringe." Announcing the fourth appearance of the Lincoln Thespians on the evening of June 29 1876 performing Enoch Arden and a vaudeville play entitled The Loan of a Lover. The performance will benefit the library and reading room and feature a much improved acting troupe: "owing to their increased facilities and some valuable additions in the way of excellent amateur talent they will present to the citizens of Lincoln a better entertainment than ever before." Admission is fifty cents reservable at J.H. Harley's Drug Store. The bottom third of the sheet lists the actors for each play with their character roles. A striking broadside and unrecorded in OCLC. 1874WRCAM48099Oakland 1874. Handbill 8 3/4 x 4 1/2 inches printed on yellow paper. Old light folds else fine. Scarce handbill advertising a night's entertainment at the Dietz Opera House the first theatre in Oakland located at the corner of Webster and 12th Streets. Shows began there around 1874 and continued until 1905 and the theatre hosted stars such as Buffalo Bill and Sarah Bernhardt. Along with McDonough & Earnshaw's Royal Marionettes and the Christy Minstrels part three of the night's entertainment is a performance called "Sports of the Fantoccini" composed of Chinese bell ringers and "Brigham Young and Family." In an 1896 SAN FRANCISCO CALL article about theatrical manager Mark Thall he claims to have been present for McDonough and Earnshaw shows at the theatre "with the first company that opened the old Dietz Opera- house" a date he places at 1870. But since shows did not begin at the Dietz until around 1874 we place the printing of this broadside at that date. unknown books

Engraved headpiece and small engravings in text for ads. 14-1/4" x 10-3/4" <br/><br/>Playbill for an early American performance of "Engaged" during the successful Poole & Donnelly era at the Grand Opera House in New York City. William Schwenk Gilbert was a prolific English playwright and dramatist. This play was published during the most successful decade of his career. In 1907 Gilbert was the first dramatist to be knighted and during his fifty years as a playwright he was credited with raising the standards on the English stage for both the playwright and the actor his use of the Comic was so unique the term 'Gilbertarian' was coined for his work which has never been truly successfully imitated. "Engaged" opened in October 1877 was well received on both the English and American stages and is still performed today. It's cited as Gilbert's most popular stage work aside from the Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas. One broadside sheet printed recto only. 18-1/8" x 6-1/4" <br/><br/>Margaret Julia Mitchell popularly known as Maggie Mitchell was an American actress born in New York. She made her first regular appearance as Julia in The Soldier's Daughter at the Chambers Street Theatre in 1851. The parts in which she was best liked were Jane Eyre Mignon Little Barefoot and Fanchon the Cricket. Wiki In January 1861 At at De Bar’s St. Charles Theatre in New Orleans Mitchell first appeared in Fanchon the Cricket a new secondhand adaptation by August Waldauer from George Sand’s story “La Petite Fadette.” Her characterization of the sprite of a heroine which included a graceful and entrancing shadow dance was an immediate sensation. Her Southern tour was cut short by the Civil War and Mitchell took Fanchon to Boston and New York where it was equally successful. Fanchon remained her mainstay for 30 years. Audiences never tired of it—her admirers included the likes of Abraham Lincoln and Ralph Waldo Emerson—and even in her 50s Mitchell retained the winsome elfin appeal that made her so successful. She also early obtained the rights to Fanchon which enabled her to amass a considerable estate. EB. We find one institutional holding of this playbill at the MHS. Broadside printed recto only. 14-1/4" x 8-1/2" <br/><br/>Playbill for a performance on Thursday September 28 1820 at an unnamed playhouse possibly the Frankfurt City Theatre. The star-crossed lovers were played by Herr Becker and Demoiselle Lindner both of whom appear in that theatre's records for other plays. The playbill lists box office times and locations cost differences for the various areas of seating the starting time of 6 o'clock in the evening etc. Interestingly a performance of "Der Corsar" "The Corsair" an opera in two acts is advertised for the following morning which we speculate was based on Byron's wildly popular work of the same name. This opera predates both Francesco Maria Piave's libretto and Verdi's opera of the same name. "Intrigue and Love" was first performed on 13 April 1784 at the Schauspiel Frankfurt in Frankfurt to wide acclaim and continues to be performed today. (n. p.) unknown books

1880List322Philadelphia: Studio of Joachim Gutekunst 1880. Mammoth albumen print on card mount with original gilt lettered mat 12 ¼ x 15 ¼ inches mat measuring 20 x 23 ½ inches. Very Good. Edwin Booth was a highly successful Shakespearean actor considered by some critics to be the greatest actor of his day. His career was complicated considerably by his relation to his brother John Wilkes Booth who Edwin would disown and refuse to mention following the assassination of President Lincoln Edwin rather poetically saved Abraham Lincoln's son Robert Todd Lincoln from possible death on a Jersey City train platform several months prior to the assassination pulling him up from between the tracks after he had been knocked off the train by a crowd. Booth had connections to Philadelphia owning a theatre there in the 1860s and this photograph was probably taken sometime after he had resumed his touring career after his Booth Theater in New York City closed in 1974 and judging from his age our best guess is that this was taken in the 1880s. Joachim Gutekunst was a highly prolific and successful photographer who enjoyed a four-decade career in Philadelphia with studios in various locations. We find no other record of this mammoth albumen portrait. A generally bright and well preserved print that has survived admirably with one small closed tear to the photograph of about half an inch. Single sheet folded once to make four pages verso blank Unfolded: 18-7/8" x 11-3/4" <br/><br/>A scarce only other known copy at UC Berkeley Bancroft Library playbill from the early days of theatre in San Francisco with numerous reviews of the play from other newspapers. The theatre was at this time leased by Catherine Sinclair the former wife of the famous actor Edwin Forrest. This performance included a young Edwin Booth a favorite friend of Sinclair in the role of "Luis a soldier of fortune". Sinclair had to give up the theatre around 1855 due to financial difficulties but continued to support Booth despite his drinking and gambling problems. The theatre had a short run but played an integral part in the careers of both Booth and Sinclair. Montgomery Street was cut through by Columbus Ave. in 1873 and the theatre closed though a small slice of it remained until the 1906 earthquake. [Herald Steam Presses] unknown books

The playbill has many local advertisements and some information about the theatre company in the years 1870 and 1871. Charles Fechter travelled from London to the United States in 1870 and enjoyed a very succesful career in Boston. Critics disaproved of his "Hamlet" also advertised on this playbill but were captivated by his refined style and Continental training Hornblow vol. 2 p. 214. unknown books
