Mangler. The Club also purchased a "false face & Postage" another tambourine "burnt cork"; 2 boxes of powder a play "Who's the Actor" and groups of music; these 3 small receipts all signed for by stage manager G.A.S. 6387Hardcover. Good. Unusual 1920s -30s SCRAPBOOK devoted to Thelma Carlton an actor and dancer who amongst other things executed one helluva hula. Fourteen black leaves 20 cm x 14 cm tied with ribbon -- a bit chipped along the edges covers absent last page coming loose. Each page is covered recto and verso with newspaper clippings images and ads devoted to Thelma Carlton. Many items are underlined to emphasize the parts specific to Carlton and there is a small photograph of her name in lights over the Club Orlando which leads one to wonder if the scrapbook belonged to a loved one of Carlton's Carlton herself or a really devoted fan. Carlton got her start with a traveling Shakespeare company and within a decade became a star of burlesque and a featured dancer at the Palais Royal in New York as well as other hits both on an off Broadway -- including "Frivolities" 44th Street Theater 1920 Nora Bayes' "Her Family Tree" Schubert Theater 1921 and "Artists and Models" Winter Garden Theater 1925. The reviews collected here invariably remark on her skill versatility and loveliness -- and few can refrain from commenting on her "ravishing" hula and other exotic numbers. While the scrapbook was not created by the tidiest of hands as the crooked cuts and occasional splotches of glue will attest it's a compelling tribute with wonderful images of costumes of the era. <br/><br/> hardcover books

1960131291New York: Self published 1960. Archive of two pieces from one of the New York Underground's most creative and charismatic orators Spencer Holst. Includes Holst's self-published first book "25 Stories" 1960 and a flyer from a reading shortly after publication at The Living Theatre in New York on February 1 1961. <br/><br/>Holst was already a well-known and gifted speaker by the time "25 Stories" was published with the help of his wife abstract expressionist painter Beate Wheeler. He frequently held audiences with his psychedelic and surrealistic tales and would give performances at Judith Malina and Julian Beck's The Living Theatre selling copies of "25 Stories" at the show. Holst's work continued to fascinate audiences and "25 Stories" was reprinted in 1993 by Station Hill Press as the better part of a career-spanning collection "The Zebra Storyteller."<br/><br/>Book: tall handbound perfect bound wrappers 4.5 x 14 inches. Spine ends chipped cracked front hinge dampstains and soiling overall Good plus and still serviceable surviving copies of this fragile book are scarce in any condition. <br/><br/>Flyer: 8 x 12.5 inches. 2004132996Los Angeles: Pandemonium Theatre Company 2004. An archive of 10 original posters for productions staged by Ray Bradbury's Pandemonium Theatre Company from 1988 to 2004. The plays were performed in Southern California predominantly at The Court Theatre Falcon Theatre Theatre West The Raven Playhouse and Melrose Theatre. <br/><br/>The archive includes posters from 10 productions including "Fahrenheit 451" "The October Country" "Past Present & Future" "The Time of Going Away" and "Drunk and In Charge of a Bicycle." and his Irish play "Falling Upward!" "Falling Upward!" was one of Bradbury's favorite plays and especially as he advanced in age he was know to encourage its frequent production simply for the joy of being able to see it again. <br/><br/>Bradbury was an avid playwright and a familiar and enthusiastic presence in the Southern California theatre circuit near his home. In 1963 he and director Charles Rome Smith founded Pandemonium Theatre Company. The two friends would go on to work with the company together for the next four decades until Rome's death in 2004. This archive is a solid representation of the company's latter half before Smith's passing and Bradbury's hearing loss which would necessitate that he stop attending performances. <br/><br/>Posters approximately 11 x 17 inches. Also included in the collection are early programs for the London Film Festival which began in 1953. Amongst many others those featured include Luchino Visconti Alfred Hitchcock Michelangelo Antonioni Vincente Minelli Fritz Lang Jacques Tati Jean Renoir Samuel Fuller Federico Fellini Charlie Chaplin and Alexander Dovzhenko. <br/><br/>Still in operation today the National Film Theatre was established in 1951 and was renamed the BFI Southbank when it was absorbed by the British Film Institute in 2007. Scandal and affairs of the heart from the remote outposts of American commerce. The American consul to the French colony in the Indian Ocean here writes back to New York "I have to inform you of having dispatched your Ship Huron Capt. Brown for Newport R. Island she left this Colony on 26 May for Bourbon to complete her chargement & sailed from thence about 15 days after for America ñ I must add the malconduct of your Capt. here has been very injurious to the Voyage by forming a connection with a bad woman who came passenger with him from Bordeaut sic ñ with the greatest difficulty he was made to sail without taking this person with him however the whole Island interfered against it & prevented her leaving the Colony because she was a favourite Actress & much wanted on the Stage however she is placed here at the expence of Capt. Brown who has placed funds in the hands of Mr. Roussell Manssell to be appropriated for her benefit and althoà Mr. Roussell is not ignorant that he has a family near Boston in the town of Marblehead he has become the confident & friend in this vile business. Capt. Brown on his arrival addressed himself to me & after finishing a part of his business because I declined the propositions made me respecting the Woman I explained to him with candour his Faults he after placed his property with Mr. Roussell who has engaged to pay her expences until Capt. B. returns to marry her. . . . This favourite woman in question was bound jointly with the other players in the sum of Ten Thousand dollars that she would tarry three years in the Colony in that Company of course these persons opposed her departure. Capt. Brown in order to effect it in my presence offered to destroy a bill of exchange of Ten Thousand dollars which was the amount of the passage money for the same persons. Since that transaction I have been kept in the dark for having found fault with Capt. BÃs conduct & threatening to put him in prison therefor - he did not choose to consult me thereafter." Lewis a Boston merchant had been appointed consul to Å’le de France by Adams and arrived in February 1798--but owing to the Quasi-War and the interruption of commerce betwen the United States and France arrived back in Boston with his family in June 1799. See the National Archives annotation to the summary memorial of Lewis to Thomas Jefferson March 20 1801. Captain Brown of the Huron is certainly Elias Brown; a notice in the Halifax N.C. Journal of October 15 1798 dated Newport September 15 reports the arrival of Brown and the Huron and news that he had prior to his adventures in love been boarded somewhere east of the Cape by the British frigate Garland on June 28--seven of his seamen were impressed and Brown was detained before escaping under cover of a squall. Brown further reports "that the national soldiers were all sent from the Isle de France but that the reports of it being declared independent are false." The first theatre troupe had been established in Port Louis in 1790 by a M. Laglaine though there was a hiatus after the smallpox epidemic of 1792 and one presumes the colonists were not likely to take kindly to seeing a keystone of their local entertainment whisked away by a Yankee merchant captain. For a glance at theatre in Mauritius and some sense of the upheavals on the island in 1798--though this affair does not seem to merit mention--see the 1840 memoir by Andre Maure Souvenirs d'un vieux colon de Maurice. Samuel Ward 1756-1832 the owner of the merchant brig Huron was a Revolutionary War veteran from a prominent Rhode Island family. Filmmakers were present to introduce their works including Stan Brakhage with his landmark short "Desistfilm" 1954. <br/><br/>The Gryphon Film Group was founded by Marie Menken and her husband Willard Maas in the mid-1950s with the help of Charles Boultenhouse and Gregory Markopoulos. It was one of the earliest attempts with Amos and Marcia Vogel's Cinema 16 at setting up a experimental film society in the United States. The group's primary interest was furthering the poetic and lyrical qualities of film often focusing on the perception of corporeality which is reflected in the film's presented both of the human form in "Geography of the Body" Maas 1943 and sculpted object "Visual Variations on Noguchi" Menken 1945. <br/><br/>Poster 8.5 x 12 inches.
