In this accessible discussion of Petronius's masterful use of parody, Gian Biagio Conte offers an interpretation of the Satyricon as a whole. He combines the scholarly precision of close reading with a significant, original theoretical model. At the heart of his interpretation, Conte reveals the technique of the "hidden author" that Petronius employs at the expense of his characters, in particular the teller of the story, Enclopius. The image depicts the table for a "Marriage Feast" with a main table and dessert and liquor side tables. The tables are decorated with cupids arrows and quivers doves and paired lovebirds. The names of the dishes reveal the conceit with "Devine Part of a Man Boiled" and "An Unruly Member Garnished". Mounted in a simple matte. Light creases at folds lines otherwise fine. Due tomi in un volume in 8° legato in mezza pelle con grandi unghie, titolo al dorso a quattro nervi, sguardie marezzate, brossure editoriali conservate, sguardie, occhielli, frontespizi, VIII, 233, 229 pp., carte d'indici. La disanima storica e filologica del "pastiche", qualcosa di simile alla parodia ma più profondo, più aggressivo. Importante la bibliografia e davvero sorprendente per ampiezza ed accuratezza gli stralci esemplificativi. Alcuni spunti invero eclatanti. In perfetto stato, notevole e poco comune.
