20099781408125755-2025Methuen Drama 2009. Hardcover. New/New.
Author: Bertolt Brecht

Publisher: Methuen Drama

Binding: Hardcover

ISBN: 9781408125755

Release Date: 2009

Number Of Pages: 112

Details: Mother Courage was first performed in Zurich in 1941 and is usually seen as Brecht's greatest work. Remaining a powerful indictment of war and social injustice it is an epic drama set in the seventeenth century during the Thirty Years' War. The plot follows the resilient Mother Courage who survives by running a commissary business that profits from all sides. As the war claims all of her children in turn the play poignantly demonstrates that no one can profit from the war without being subject to its terrible cost also. This translation by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner is contemporary and lively with accessible and humour language an easy conversational flow sympathetic understandable characters and humour. Kushner makes a classic play which is notoriously difficult to perform both stage and reader friendly. It was staged at the National Theatre directed by Deborah Warner and starring Fiona Shaw in September 2009.
Methuen Drama hardcover

Frommann-9783772822025frommann-holzboog Verlag e.K. German. Hardcover. New. X 295 p. 22 ill. 158 x 208 cm. Johann Valentin Andreae 15861654 caused quite a stir in his younger years as a reformer and writer. Until now however his late work has been little known. Research into Andreaes extensive literary legacy preserved by the Herzog-August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel has contributed to clarifying Andreaes manifold personas: he was an intense and versatile conversation partner to Duke August zu Braunschweig-Lüneburg; he was also a perceptive observer of the Thirty Year War a connoisseur and collector of literature fine arts and music as well as a book lover; but most importantly Andreae was the leading figure of Lutheranism in southern Germany as well as a follower of Pietism as it was initiated by Johann Arndt. An analysis of this material adds a new dimension to the cultural intellectual and Church history of the period. frommann-holzboog Verlag e.K. hardcover
