94311Paris Ruault 1773-1775. . S. 1773. / 2. 1927002208Paris: Henry Babou 1927. Limited First Edition. Half Morocco over decorated paper with original wraps bound in. Very Good. No. 51 of 525 this being one of 50 copies on papier verge blanc de Hollande with pochoir plates also on Hollande and thus a more special copy than the vast majority of the limitation. Bound by Donnelley of Chicago. The watercolors of Montassier were printed with a pochoir process by the master of pochoir Jean Saude. The pochoir plates and headers at the beginning of each of the five acts dazzle with their lucious color. 4to. 29 by 23 cm 11.5 by 9 inches. 139 2 pp. With ten pochoir color plates. Henri Montassier 1880 - 1946 painted in a wide range of genres and was an active contributor to such well-known periodicals as "Le Sourire" "L'Illustration" and "La Baionnette". Jean Saude is unquestionably better known today in part because he wrote the most authoritative treatise on the pochoir process when its popularity was on the rise. The morocco is rubbed along the joints and is worn in the lower corners with a few tiny spots of wear elsewhere along the edge. The paper pasted onto the boards features a design of a Centaur pipes an urn each bordered by vines. The paper is sunned or faded somewhat particularly along the edges. Still the binding is attractive as a single unit and in all its components. Within a few pages have light foxing. Otherwise the paper is luxuriant and impressive. Some offsetting from the pochoirs onto the opposite pages. Henry Babou unknown

Marbled paper boards. Some manuscript notes in margins of certain leaves. Foxing and marginal dampstaining to right corner of the Addition au supplément. Overall paper more or less yellowed. From 1773 to 1774 Beaumarchais published 4 memoirs in which he dramatized his legal adventure one can see that he had chosen to represent himself. These 4 memoirs which blend dialogues and interrogations entertained all of Paris even Madame Du Barry and were performed everywhere in cafés and on the boulevards as they constitute a formidable comedy in which lies are ultimately revealed. Beaumarchais was indeed acquitted in the case that opposed him to Judge Goezman; the latter was the reporting judge in his trial regarding the Paris-Duverney inheritance which ruined and dishonored the author. Beaumarchais accused Goezman of corruption and the judge in turn accused Beaumarchais of defamation and attempted corruption. Judge Goezman constitutes above all a symbol of the corruption of the new Parliament erected by Louis XV and of the arbitrariness of justice. Imprimerie de Valleyre hardcover

Adams 79-8b. Gephart 12818. Sabin 4182. Goldsmiths I-11908. Etcheverria & Wilkie 779/12. Fay 12. JFBell B-129. Caron de Beaumarchais 1732-1799 was a playwright watchmaker and adventurer whose best-known works are "The Marriage of Figaro" and "The Barber of Seville". At the behest of Joseph Duverney financier and advisor to Mme de Pompadour he was sent on several missions to England and to Spain to try to secure a monopoly on the slave trade; although unsuccessful he managed through other undertakings to become financially secure enough to purchase the post of "King's Secretary". Beaumarchais was already surreptitiously supplying arms to the American colonies when France came into the war officially in 1778 on the side of the Americans. He now organized a fleet of merchant ships whose purpose was to supply cannon and ammunition to the Continental Congress in exchange for produce especially tobacco. Forty years later his daughter was still waiting for compensation said to be approximately twenty million francs. As a supporter of the French Revolution Beaumarchais' position at the Court was suspect; he spent some time in prison and then fled to England and thence to the Continent; his Paris property was confiscated. He returned to Paris in 1796 but died in relative poverty in 1799. This work was written in response to an earlier work by Edward Gibbon concerning the assistance given by France to the Americans during the Revolutionary War and is "a recital of French and U.S. grievances against Great Britain and a justification of French policy." - Etcheverria & Wilkie. Between 1773 and 1776 Beaumarchais published several memoirs in which he staged his own legal battle he had chosen to represent himself. These four memoirs blending dialogues and interrogations captivated all of Parisincluding Madame Du Barryand were performed in cafés and along the boulevards. They read like a brilliant comedy in which deception is ultimately unmasked. Beaumarchais was eventually acquitted in the case that opposed him to Judge Goezman who had been the reporting magistrate in the Paris-Duverney inheritance case that had brought Beaumarchais to financial ruin and public disgrace. In turn Beaumarchais accused Goezman of corruption while Goezman countered with charges of defamation and attempted bribery. Judge Goezman ultimately came to symbolize the corruption of the new Parliament established by Louis XV and the arbitrariness of the justice system. Chez Ruault unknown

It is one of the most important books published in the 17th century for the study of mythology in the contemporary literature. It is a folio of over 500 pages illustrated with 58 full-page engravings.
_x000d_
The present work takes Marolles' as its starting point although the preface warns that the "title is almost the only conformity that exists between his work and that now given to the public"; and that the present work has a fuller and more accurate historical explanation. Nevertheless the structure of the work is clearly similar its contents being modified and summarised in comparison with the first. The same preface also mentions that some of the engravings are based on those illustrating the work of Marolles although "they appear here with such great changes that apart from the exception they have all the merit of novelty".
_x000d_
Bernard Picart Paris 1673 - Amsterdam 1733 was a noted illustrator who gained much reputation in the Netherlands and with a style similar to that of Rembrandt and Guido Reni.
_x000d_
Antoine de Labarre de Beaumarchais 1698 - 1750 is the author of the text. Born in Paris and a former Parisian canon he moved to the Dutch Republic where he devoted himself to journalism and writing and where according to himself he found a real freedom of ideas and speech.
_x000d_
Referencias/References:
_x000d_
BNF ark:/12148/cb30701498g
_x000d_
Worldcat E39PBJk4B98MGfTqg6VGQhYtrq.
M-8-A-37 hardcover
