Some trivial wear to the extremities family tree in pen to flyleaf;some notes on prophecy related to WWII in a neat miniscule hand to FFEP verso and some erasable pencil notes to rear flyleaf; otherwise a sound and handsome binding with clean fresh text. A copublication between the two royal-privileged printers Oxford and Cambridge though printed solely by C.J. Clay at Cambridge. The Revised Version was the product of over a decade of British and American collaborative work co-financed by Oxford and Cambridge in exchange for exclusive co-copyright on the text. Received with great acclaim and criticism it shot Oxford's number of Bibles printed per-annum over 2 million for the first time. The RV committee was a spectacular assembly of scholarly prowess who made enthusiastic use of the most recent scholarship including the new critical Greek text of Westcott and Hort. Conspicuously absent from the committee were the more literary voices of King James's translators and the somewhat wooden style of the RV suffers for it though exegetes have prized it for exactly the same reason. A surprising inclusion in this royally-convened committe was a large team of Americans: 'In every instance the suggestions from America were treated with the same consideration as those proceeding from members of the English Company and were adopted or rejected on their merits. It was a part of the terms of agreement with the American Company that all points of ultimate difference between them and the English Revisers should be placed on record found in the appendix . Spine with raised bands a broad foliate gilt roll on each band second and fourth compartments gilt-lettered within rest with gilt frames. Gilt inner dentelles and board edges. The Bible Society of Philadelphia founded in 1808 with Bp. William White as its first president was the first Bible society organized in the United States. It published this the first stereotype Bible printed in the U.S. from plates imported from London; the B.F.B.S. contributed £500 towards the purchase of the plates and they were admitted to the U.S. free of import duties. The initial run produced 1050 copies of the complete Bible and 750 copies of the New Testament in double columns in very small type.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Signature of Edward H. The Phinney brothers Henry and Elihu carried on the business their father Elihu Phinney had started in 1795; the elder Phinney had established a press bookshop and newspaper after resettling in Cooperstown from Connecticut. James Fenimore Cooper a delegate to the 1816 convention that formed the American Bible Society learned to set type in his shop for fun Hills 69. The younger Phinneys however were not to be restricted to one shop: They sold their stock which consisted of their own publications together with books brought in from Philadelphia and New York from large travelling wagons and established a "bookboat" on the Erie Canal that enabled them to reach a larger portion of western New York.<br>Â Â Â Â The New Testament here has a separate title-page and the volume is llustrated with 10 wood engraved plates including two frontispieces. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Hills English Bible in America 972.
