1969163H5292New York: W.W. Norton & Company Inc. 1969. Book. Good. Paperback. Briefer Version. Sm 8vo. pp. xxv 227. A condensed version of the two-volume 1904 first edition. "The Standard Oil Company was the first major industrial monopoly in the United States. But clouding this success was one important failure. John D. Rockefeller's great wealth and power did not protect him from defeat at the hands of the magazine journalist Ida Minerva tarbell. The forceful muckraker historian of the Standard Oil Company did more than single out Rockefeller as the architect and the driving force behind the trust. She offered the oil man as the symbol and the cause of all that she felt was wrong in the national life." - Introduction. Average wear. Binding intact. Moderate quantity of yellow high-lighting to contents. A sound copy of this fascinating history. W.W. Norton & Company, Inc. Paperback

1965513160Cambridge University Press 1965. Leather. NEAR FINE. A very nice mid-century printing of the coveted Turquoise setting on India Paper printed at the Bentley House in London. vi 1184 361pp.; 125 concordance color lithograph maps and gazeteer. Large 8vo Smyth-sewn binding with overcast stitching in hand-grained Morocco goatskin leather with leather liner; all edges gilt gilt stamped spine lettering two place ribbons. Owner's imprinted name scratched off; some trivial scuffing to the gilt very faint dampstains to just a few pages; otherwise an uncommonly nice copy with little evidence of use--no markings blank dedication pages very clean and bright pages and tight sound binding. One of the most sought-after settings of the KJV the Cambridge Turquoise is prized for its boldness and clarity of it's large font especially when printed on the older 'India Paper' makes for one of the most eminently legible personal Bibles -- readable from a distance of several feet. While the goatskin leather is very nice the key to the value of this printing is the paper. The excellence of the India Paper of this era the likes of which has not been produced since the 70's is hard to overstate. Decades of research and development by Oxford and Cambridge went into producing this astounding combination of thinness strenght and opacity. Cambridge University Press unknown

1935507154Oxford University Press 1935. Leather. VERY GOOD. 1480pp in continuous pagination accross OT Apocrypha and NT. 15x12x4.5' in red goatskin over bevelled boards with blind-ruled rasied bands and 'HOLY BIBLE' title stamped in gilt. Versified dual-column text with bold large font quite legible from a distance of several feet. A colossal lectern / pulpit bible gifted to a Mount Lebanon Pennsylvania Episcopal parish with leatherdedication plate d. 1935; though without publication date it was likely near that year as the 'house' binding of red goatskin matches exactly that of the Bruce Rogers Lectern Bible we recently held published in 1935. With some petina to the leather and light rubbing to extremities endpaper edges a bit chipped tape-repaired tear to 1175 faint dampstain to fore edge only visible in a certain light; we leaved through every page and found only a few lector assignments marked in pencil which we have erased; otherwise an uncommonly clean copy with very sound tight binding bright gilt and crisp pages.
