Shelfwear. 1 corner of wraps creased. ; Statues of the god Priapus stood in Roman gardens to warn potential thieves that the god would rape them if they attempted to steal from him. In this book, Richlin argues that the attitude of sexual aggressiveness in defense of a bounded area serves as a model for Roman satire from Lucilius to Juvenal. Using literary, anthropological, psychological, and feminist methodologies, she suggests that aggressive sexual humor reinforces aggressive behavior on both the individual and societal levels, and that Roman satire provides an insight into Roman culture. Including a substantial and provocative new introduction, this revised edition is important not only as an in-depth study of Roman sexual satire, but also as a commentary on the effects of all humor on society and its victims. ; 352 pages
Two Plays bound together: 162 p. Continuous pagination. Early ownership of J. Waldier, 1774, on first title page. Bottom margin of The Funeral title page clipped. 12 mo. 155mm. Virtually disbound. This perhaps should best be considered a candidate for rebinding. Sir Richard Steele (ca. 1672-1729), was a famed english author and politician. The Funeral (first produced in 1702), with its patriotic motifs, apparently attracted the favourable attention of the King himself. The Tender Husband, a comedy, had a brief initial run in April 1705. It returned to Drury Lane for performances later in the year and remained a staple of the London stage repertory for many decades, without remuneration for the author. It is significant that Steele did not have another new play produced until many years later when he was a partner in the Drury Lane management and thus able to reap rewards both as author and as manager - DNB. After examining pretrial scenarios in the Attic orators and comparable ones in Roman legal sources, the author turns to the plays of Greek New Comedy and their later Roman adaptations. There she identifies similar scenarios, especially in disputes concerning sexual violations, the marriages of heiresses, and divorces, and shows that recognition of legal scenarios aids interpretation of New Comedy texts.
