ELEGANT CONTEMPORARY BURNT ORANGE CRUSHED MOROCCO BY ANDREW GRIEVE OF EDINBURGH stamp-signed on front pastedown covers with double gilt-rule border and mitered frame with oblique lily cornerpieces raised bands spines gilt in double-ruled compartments with lily at center gilt titling richly gilt turn-ins in a closely-spaced floral and foliate pattern marbled endpapers top edges gilt five of the volumes PARTLY UNOPENED. With a frontispiece portrait of the playwright in volume I and 34 etchings by Adolphe Lalauze all with tissue guards. Front pastedowns with engraved bookplate of Andrew Smith of Whitchester. ◆IN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE CONDITION mostly unread and entirely unworn. This is a handsomely illustrated English version of the plays of Molière still considered the greatest writer of French comedies. The set is offered here in simply decorated but elegant bindings produced by the fine Edinburgh workshop of Andrew Grieve using the highest quality materials. Grieve was a first-rate binder but he is best known as the teacher of Charles McLeish who worked 16 years for the exacting Cobden-Sanderson as finisher at the Doves Bindery. Under the stage name "Molière" actor and playwright Jean-Baptiste Poquelin 1622-73 penned and produced satirical plays--many of which caused considerable scandal--at the Parisian theater now known as the Comédie Française. According to Britannica "the actor in him influenced his writing since he wrote at speed what he could most naturally act. . . . His characters are imagined as excitable and excited to the point of incoherence. He sacrifices plot to drama vivacity a sense of life. He is a classical writer yet he is ready to defy all rules of writing." The present collection contains the masterworks "Tartuffe" "The Misanthrope" and "The Bourgeois Gentleman" as well as the scandalous "School for Wives" and lesser-known works--33 plays in all. A scene from each of the plays is depicted in the etchings by the talented and prolific illustrator Lalauze who also contributed a portrait of the playwright. While French in content and with a text in English the present set is Scottish in production and provenance. Translator Henri van Laun 1820-96 was a French master at Edinburgh Academy who was encouraged to undertake this translation into English by his acquaintances among that city's intelligentsia. The books were printed in Edinburgh and bound there probably for former owner Andrew Smith an Edinburgh brewer and bibliophile. W. Paterson unknown

Edited by Antoine Bret. Very attractive 19th century maroon morocco gilt covers with French fillet border raised bands spine compartments with central fleuron gilt lettering turn-ins with multiple decorative rolls marbled endpapers all edges gilt. With title page vignettes engraved portrait after Mignard in volume I and 33 ENGRAVED PLATES after Moreau le jeune. Front pastedowns with armorial bookplate of the Earl of Cromer engraved by J. F. Badeley and dated 1919; half titles with faded ink signature of Francis Willett. Cohen-de Ricci 716-19; Furstenberg 109; Lewine 363; Tchemerzine VIII 360; Brunet III 1798-99. ◆A touch of rubbing to joints and extremities one leaf with three-inch closed tear into text no loss other trivial imperfections in the text but A VERY ATTRACTIVE SET UNUSUALLY BRIGHT FRESH AND CLEAN INTERNALLY and with the engravings richly impressed. This is a handsomely bound set of what Lewine calls a "remarkable" edition both "for the type and for the beauty of the illustrations." In addition to the extensive learned commentary by French playwright Antoine Bret our copy is enhanced with lively plates illustrating scenes by one of the greatest illustrators of the day Moreau le jeune 1741-1814. According to the Getty Museum publishers sought out Moreau "for his powers of observation and ability to capture nuances of gesture pose and light." Ray says that the best work by Moreau "showed him to be the equal of the established rococo masters Boucher Eisen and Gravelot" and that in his heyday "he carried all before him." According to Furstenberg our "Molière is rightly considered one of the masterpieces of illustration in the eighteenth century." And Tchemerzine considers the present edition with the additional pages numbered 66-67 and 80-81 and with signatures very clear on the plates "L'Avare" and "Le Sicilien ou l'amour peintre" the best version of this beautifully illustrated Molière. Former owner Rowland Thomas Baring 2nd Earl of Cromer 1877-1953 was a British soldier and diplomat who served as Lord Chamberlain--the most senior official in the Royal Household of the United Kingdom--from 1922 to 1938 a period that included one of the monarchy's greatest crises the abdication of Edward VIII. Ownership of our set would have made sense for him since one of his duties as Lord Chamberlain was deciding which plays would be allowed to be performed in Britain. 188097222Paris France circa 1880-1899. 1880-1899. Fair. - Quarto 14 inches high by 10-3/4 inches wide. Softcover bound in printed tan wraps titled in gilt on the front cover identified as "Partition Orchestre" in gilt along the top left and with the Comedie-Francaise's 1680 dated stamp on the front cover. "Partition Orchestre" is underlined in red graphite at the top of the front cover. The top and bottom edges to the soiled covers are chipped with tears to the top corner of the front cover and a piece out from the top corner of the rear. The front cover is nearly detached with tears along the spine and the rear cover is glued to the last blank leaf. Title plus 98 pages printed on lined music paper with most sheets stamped "Comedie Francaise 1680". The text is also printed in the appropriate parts of the score. The text block is shaken. There is occasional light soiling with signs of early worming to the top corner of the last 2 leaves. Good in a fair binding. Titled: "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme. Partition d'Orchestre. J.B. Lulli" on the title page.This copy of the score was evidently prepared for a performance as there are numerous pencil notes throughout.Laurent Leon 1835-1913 was the music director at the Comedie Francaise Paris from 1871 to 1913.The parts of the score are as follows:Overture. Pp. 1-8Marche. Pp. 9-10. At the head of page 9 is printed "Reconstituee par L. Leon Chef d'orchestre de la comedie francaise conforme a la reprise de la Comedie Francaise 1880".Act 1 No. 1: La Musicienne. Pp. 11-14; No. 2: Chanson de Jeanneton; P. 15. No. 3: Recits et Trio. A note at the foot of page 55 states: "Ce morceau de Lulli etant introuvable on a introduit pour l'air des cuisiniers la musique de Rameau". The music of Rameau substituted for that of Lully is his popular work "Le Tambourin".Act 3 No. 9: Air a Boire. Pp. 57-66. For the most part this march is identical to No. 10.A play intermingled with music dance and singing by Moliere Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme was first performed in 1670.
