Der vor allem als Dramatiker tätige Congreve gehörte zu den bekanntesten Autoren sogenannter ?Restaurationskomödien?, welche zur Zeit der ?Englischen Restauration? verfasst und aufgeführt wurden. Sein Opernlibretto ?Semele? wird, nach einer ersten Vertonung durch einen englischen Komponisten von Georg Friedrich Händel zum dramatischen Oratorium umgearbeitet, noch heute aufgeführt. Mit dem Porträt des Autors nach einem Gemälde des bekannten englischen Porträtisten Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723) gestochen von Michael (Michiel) Van der Gucht (1660-1725), sowie vier Illustrationstafeln gestochen von Charles Grignion (1717-1810) nach Entwürfen von Francis Hayman (1708-1776).
