Gutes Ex.; geringfügige Lagerspuren. - Als Typoskript gedruckt. - ... Publishers cloth. 12mo. Pages. 19 cm. First Yiddish edition. Jean Christophe, translated from the French by K Fornberg. Book 1, Der beginen 2, Der frih-morgen - 3 Yugend 4, Der oyfshtand 5, Di bafrayung. Rollands most renowned work, by far, was Jean-Christophe, completed in 1912. The 10-volume novel is the original roman fleuve, a work that chronicles a sprawling history that gives an overall, often-critical view of society during its time. In 1915 the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Romain Rolland as a tribute to the lofty idealism of his literary production and to the sympathy and love of truth with which he has described different types of human beings. Partly because of his outspoken defense of human rights, especially the rights of minorities, Rolland had a mass following among European Jews. In fact, the Yiddish translation of Jean-Christophe . "This book does not claim to have said anything new, but is rather a reviewing of an old story through an individual lens which may bring into a new perspective the leading characters and events of that story. It is a story that can never be exhausted, and is always unfolding; that fact, and the narrow, unsatisfactory method of disconnecting teaching, and spiritualising in general practice, are my excuses for attempting to give it as one continual history, 'The Drama of the Ages', whose pivotal centre is Christ Himself and His teaching." - from Preface. Foxing/dustsoiling to top of textblock. Minor Shelfwear. Review of book by Marsh McCall tipped in (signed by Mccall to Philippa Goold). ; Oxford Classical Monographs; 283 pages; Euripides' Hecuba is is dominated by the vengence which Hecuba takes on the faithless Polymestor, and explores in a complex and profound manner the potential of revenge as a subject for tragedy. The sacrifice of Polyxena is in counterpoint to the revenge action; the whole is set in the chaotic aftermath of the fall of Troy. The combination of plots creates one of Eruipides' most effective dramas, full of pathos, suspense, and excitement. This, the first book-length study of the play in English, argues that it has been greatly undervalued by critics who have failed to appreciate the power of its rhetoric, the subtlety of its characterization, and the beauty of its choral odes. The book also examines and seeks to explain the powerful influence of Hecuba in the Renaissance, and compares the play with English revenge tragedy of the 16th and 17th century.
