199624398NY and London: W. W. Norton & Company. As New with No dust jacket as issued. 1996. Second Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover. 034545281X . Publisher's full red cloth spine in five compartments separated by raised bands and gilt borders gilt lettering in three compartments gilt tooling in remainder. Red silk marked bound in. Folio 376 x 251 mm. This is a full-size photographic facsimile of the First Folio edition of Shakespeare's plays which was printed over a period of two years and released in 1623. As printing of the First Filios proceeded proofs were read and corrections were made. The uncorrected sheets were not thrown out but were mixed in with the corrected ones with the result that no two First Folios of which there are 240 in existence are identical. This edition reproduces pages from 29 of the most satisfactory copies out of the 82 now in the Folger Shakespeare Library originally selected by Prof. Charlton Hinman in 1968. In his Introduction Peter W. M. Blayney reconsiders Professor Hinman's findings in the light of new Elizabethan scholarship. The volume includes all of the line numbering established in the 1968 edition as well as the traditional Globe act-scene-line numbers. Professor Blayney's Introduction includes a table identifying the order the pages of each play were set and the compositors believed to have set each page. This is a unique and invaluable tool for any serious Shakespeare scholar. The volume is in perfect pristine condition unmarked tight square and clean. The slipcase is also in perfect condition. A large heavy book 11 pounds - additional shipping charges may apply. AS NEW. . Facsimiles. Folio 13" - 23" tall. 928 pp . W. W. Norton & Company hardcover

19303057
Cambridge England: The Festival Theatre 1930.

Rare program for a 1930 production of Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard" at the Festival Theatre in Cambridge England.

Tyrone Guthrie directed the production which featured several young actors who went on to acclaimed careers including Robert Donat Frederick Piper Flora Robson Miriam Lewes Evan John Barbara Nixon Philip Thornley and Catharina Ferraz. Guthrie himself also went on to a great career.

Robert Donat who played the landowner Semyonov-Pistchick later won the Academy Award for Best Actor in the 1939 film "Goodbye Mr. Chips." He beat out Clark Gable in "Gone With the Wind." Donat has contributed an article on the playing of Hamlet which of course has nothing to do with "The Cherry Orchard" but whatever.

Also notable in this program dated May 10 1930 are the numerous advertisements for such things as luxury cars evening hats restaurants home furnishings and the like. Clearly the Depression hadn't yet left its mark on Cambridge.

Alderson Burrell Horne who adopted the stage name of Anmer Hall managed the Festival Theatre in Cambridge and brought in Tyrone Guthrie as the resident director. Guthrie has contributed a "producer's note" to the program.

This program is scarce. No institutional holdings listed in OCLC.

PHYSICAL DETAILS: Octavo 8.25 x 6 inches; 202 x 155 mm 26 pages including covers in stapled illustrated wrappers soft covers.

CONDITION: Small area of paper loss to lower right corner of cover staples badly rusted 2 leaves detached from staples rubbing to spine some creasing to pages. About Good overall.

The Festival Theatre paperback
