With copious illustrations throughout by John Leech including twenty coloured plates collated complete. Gilbert Abbott à Beckett 1811 1856 was an English humorist and contributor to Punch magazine. He is perhaps best known as the author of Comic History of England Comic History of Rome Comic Blackstone and other comic works. Complete in two volumes. Rebound in half-calf with marbled boards. Some dodo has taped a page in the front with a long quote from the Encyclopedia Britannica on the magazine and Seymour the illustrator.The title page preface and the first issue 5 Jan 1833 are taped in. There is a break in the binding following. The balance of the issues are "very good" or better with another break in the binding at the last hinge. The "poor" grade for the book is primarily due to binding problems not content. The last issue is #107 for 21 December 1833. Still pretty funny after most of 200 years.; Magazine; 9x11 1/2" . W. Plates darkened. <br/><br/>A mid-Victorian comic look at Rome which might be more appealing to some readers than drier more serious works on the Eternal City. John Leech was a staff artist for "Punch" from its beginnings in 1841 while the author was one of the comic magazine's original staff writers. If Leech's illustrations appear more Victorian than Roman the effect is purposeful since the goal of the two men was to critique Victorian society itself. À Beckett displays both a gentle sense of humor and a deep familiarity with the content of the ancient sources. In his Preface he states this work has been prompted by a very serious desire to instruct those who though willing to acquire information seek in doing so as much amusement as possible.
