Two Volumes. Illustrated with full page engravings in very good state, and a folding map (soiled and slightly chipped). The lovely engravings are mostly by R. Scott after drawings by J. Stevenson. On title page of Volume One there is an inked inscription "Edward James Foote, to his beloved Wife Mary Foote. On title page of Volume Two inked inscription "Edward James Foote to his beloved Wife Mary Foote: and since her lamented death to our Daughters Mary, Elizabeth, Eleanor & Anna". 235mm. Original full leather bindings, very worn. Boards very fragile or detached. The early owner of this set - Vice-Admiral Sir Edward James Foote (1767-1833) was a prominent Royal Navy officer during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He served on a number of ships and at several actions, but is best known for becoming caught up in the aftermath of the collapse of the Parthenopean Republic at Naples in 1799. The Gentle Shephered was first published in 1725. The author, Allan Ramsay (1686-1758) was a Scottish poet (or makar), playwright, publisher, librarian and wig-maker! VERIA BX 2

The emphasis is on the genre itself, the role of imitation in constituting and maintaining its identity, and on the Renaissance extension from bucolic to the wider and more diffuse phenomenon of pastoral. Therefore the seminal role of Theocritus, Virgil, Dante, Petrarch, Sannazaro, Tasso, and in England Spenser and Sidney is highlighted by means of an analysis of their works in this vein. Tagli a spruzzo rossi. Il primo frontespizio ha il titolo in rosso e nero; fregi ornamentali incisi ad entrambi i frontespizi. Antica firma cassata al risguardo; altra firma antica al primo frontespizio. Lavori di tarlo rimarginati al contropiatto e al risgardo anteriore. Sparse quanto fisiologiche fioriture. Bell'esemplare. L'edizione contiene un catalogo ragionato delle edizioni dell'"Aminta" e dell'"Alceo" a partire dalle princeps del 1581 e 1582, un elenco delle traduzioni in diverse lingue, osservazioni filologiche "sopra alcuni luoghi delle Varie Lezioni tratte dal MS. originale", la riproduzione di una dedicatoria di Aldo Mannucci a Ferrando Gonzaga, varianti testuali tratte dal manoscritto autografo tassiano. "L'Aminta ci sembra l'espressione di un momento unico di felicità nella vita del poeta della Gerusalemme, che ha scritto cose più profonde, ma nessun'opera così equilibrata, così libera da ogni traccia di sforzo come questo dramma pastorale, destinato, dopo il primo grande successo di Corte, a una straordinaria fortuna italiana ed europea e a promuovere una grande fioritura di simili drammi: tutti privi, per altro, non esclusa la più complessa tragicommedia del Pastor Fido del Guarini, del sottile incanto della favola tassesca" (Mario Fubini). L''"Alceo" di Antonio Ongaro (Latera, 1560-Valentano, 1593), favola pescatoria costituente un travestimento dell'"Aminta" tassiana ("l'Aminta bagnato" venne scherzosamente definita), venne pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1582.
