1913 · v0794 — Nashville TN: Monarch Company 1913. General and wide-ranging self-help compilation with special reference to African-Americans. Of particular interest are 4 sections of b/w photos 15 plates each depicting successful African-Americans at work and leisure. Includes sections on the history & prospects of Black people particularly noting Egypt & Ethiopia; lists of successful Black mostly men in several fields are offered; the Chinese & Japanese are brought in for examples of non-white peoples gaining the respect of white nations; the Irish Jews & Italians are also used for comparative purposes. Most of the book though is general self-improvement advice and reference both mental and physical including love & marriage astrology & palmistry religion character-building education health & first aid law etiquette & oration and who knows why two pages of cotton growing statistics. Gay first published a similar book in 1896; this is one of at least two revised versions of which this has more pictures. A cheaply-made book: few have survived. Hardcover as pictured; recently rebacked with part of the original spine laid down new legible label. Boards show some wear upper corner dog-gnawed short tears & chips to a few page edges.
