Illustrations a few in color. Folding maps. Dornbusch 1347. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 10.5 inches. Bookplate of previous owner on fep. Small edge tears on several pages noted. This is the second volume of the history of the 2d U.S. Infantry Division in the Korean conflict. It covers two campaigns: the Second Korean Winter 28 November 1951--20 April 1952 and Korea Summer-Fall 1952 1 May 1952--30 November 1952. All efforts were directed to give adequate coverage to all units and to present an accurate and objective account of their activities from the end of the Heartbreak Ridge action on 25 October 1951 which concluded the first volume to 30 November 1952. The account of tactical operations for infantry united was carried through until 31 December 1952 when the Division was relieved and moved into reserve. Emphasis was placed upon photographs to record forever this period of the Division's history for the men who lived it. The 2nd Infantry Division "Indianhead"; "2ID" "2nd ID" or "Second D" is a formation of the United States Army. With the outbreak of hostilities in Korea during the summer of 1950 the 2nd Infantry Division was the first unit to reach Korea directly from the United States. The entire division was committed as a unit on 24 August 1950 relieving the 24th Infantry Division at the Naktong River Line. In the 16-day battle the division's clerks bandsmen technical and supply personnel joined in the fight to defend against the attackers. The Chinese winter offensive was finally blunted by the 2nd Infantry Division on 31 January at Wonju. In February 1951 the division repulsed a powerful Chinese counter-offensive in the epic battles of Chipyong-ni and Wonju. In August 1951 it was on the offensive once again ordered to attack a series of ridges that had been designated threats to the Eighth Army's line. These actions would devolve into the terrible battles that would become Bloody Ridge and Heartbreak Ridge. Toppan Printing Co., Ltd hardcover
195382308New York: Thomas Y. Crowell Company 1953. Presumed First Edition First printing. Hardcover. Good. xi 3 290 pages. Footnotes. Tabular information. Index. Front board weak and restrengthened with glue. Endpaper maps Map of U.S. Railroads Classified According to Capacity and Relative Importance and Map of Principal Waterways of the United States. Topics covered include Transport Organization for War; The Railroad Achievement; Railway Passenger Traffic; Export-Import Traffic; Transport by Open-Top Cars; Grain Transport by Rail; Refrigerator Car Movement; Transport of Petroleum; Motor Transport--The Rationing Program; Motor Transport--The Conservation Program for Commercial Vehicles; Domestic Waterway Transport; Domestic Air Transport; Conclusions. Also includes Conclusions. During World War II the U.S. government did not find it necessary to take over the railroads or other carriers except for short periods as a result of labor difficulties. The war demonstrated that centralized direction of the nation's transport could be achieved without government operation. This accomplishment was possible because the lessons of 1917 were well learned and measures were adopted by both the railroads and the government to avert the experience of the first war. Although these measures did not constitute a solution to transport problems during the war they did serve a most valuable purpose. They prevented a repetition of the collapse of 1917 by furnishing a nucleus from which evolved a comprehensive system of transport control and coordination. Discusses mostly the transport of goods throughout America during the war what with gas rationing and all. Covers rail water and motor transport. The author was at the time an Associate Professor of Transportation at the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce University of Pennsylvania. Additionally he was the Historical Officer of the Office of Defense Transportation ODT during World War II and he initiated and supervised most of the writing of the account of the activities of that office entitled Civilian War Transport A Record of the Control of Domestic Operation 1941-1946 Government Printing Office 1948. This work is more comprehensive than the former work in that it covers the operation of all domestic carriers and of the numerous governmental agencies concerned with domestic wartime transportation in addition to the ODT. Furthermore the present work was sponsored by the Social Science Research Council rather than being a descriptive narrative it is critical and objective. The former was undocumented and this work is fully documented. Thomas Y. Crowell Company hardcover
