Griffith and starring Lillian Gish in turn based on the 1898 play by Charlotte Blair Parker. Although the play was filmed twice previously in 1908 and 1914 and once subsequently in a Gary Cooper starring 1935 sound film Griffith's version stands out due the inclusion of a bravura set piece where star Gish flees across an icy river a sequence done without the aid of stunt people or special effects. <br/><br/>Very Good in a Very Good dust jacket.
