He is best known for his 'Memoires' 1664 and the 'Maximes' 1665. These epigrams are famous for the way that they express harsh or paradoxical truths in the briefest manner. La Rochefoucauld was a cynical observer of Louis XIV's court who saw in human behavior mostly selfishness hypocrisy and weakness. In his pessimism La Rochefoucauld was very democratic - everybody is a sinner. His insights have influenced amongst others Lord Chesterfield Franklin Thomas Hardy Nietzsche Stendhal and Gide.
