208823Paris: Editions Jules Tallandier . Pictorial Hard Boards. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Rabier Benjamin. 64pp. A super copy of this book by Benjamin Rabier. Numeorus charming illustrations throughout by the author support the text many in colour others are line drawings. The pictures and pages are fresh and bright well preserved. Pictorial hardboards with quarter cloth. Light bumps to two corners and all corners are rubbed. Split of 2 cm to the cloth edge from the head of the spine. Light shelf weart to the boards. Tear of 1.5 cm to the lower edge of the front end paper and one of 1 cm from the front edge of the rear end paper both with no loss. Evidence of moisture to the tail of the pages leaving a faint tide mark rising to 5cm along the inner margin. This tide-mark does not affect any illustrative plate nor text. Slight wrinkling to the lower edge of the rear boards where the water damage has occured. Otherwsie the book is clean and tight. A lovely well preserved copy of this book - the leaves are not thumbed or soiled as is so often the case with childrens book. Editions Jules Tallandier hardcover
27749S.l.n.d. circa 1936. 1 planche 315 x 420 mm aquarellée. . Planche originale rehaussée à l'aquarelle et signée. Elle vient illustrer le texte contrecollé au centre de la planche : il s'agit d'une fable de Florian « Le Grillon » dont Rabier illustre l'œuvre en 1936 pour le compte des éditions Garnier. Cette planche ainsi composée est celle qui a servi à l'édition. . C'est en 1792 que Florian publie un recueil de cent fables réparties en cinq livres auxquelles s'ajouteront douze fables publiées à titre posthume. Ce sera son principal titre de gloire et la raison de sa survie littéraire étant communément admis que ses fables sont considérées comme les meilleures après celles de Jean de La Fontaine ; pour son inspiration même s'il invente quelques sujets Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian puisa surtout dans le fonds commun des fables que constituent les ouvrages d'Ésope et des fabulistes allemands en prenant soin d'éviter les sujets déjà traités par La Fontaine. Les morales de certains de ses apologues sont encore citées couramment comme « Chacun son métier les vaches seront bien gardées » Le Vacher et le Garde-chasse « L'asile le plus sûr est le sein d'une mère » La Mère l'Enfant et les Sarigues « éclairer sa lanterne » Le Singe qui montre la lanterne magique « rira bien qui rira le dernier » Les Deux Paysans et le Nuage ou encore les expressions comme « larmes de crocodile » « réveiller le chat qui dort » et même « aller se faire tondre » passées dans le langage courant. Le dernier vers de ce Grillon n'est pas la moins célèbre : « Pour vivre heureux vivons caché ». L'art de Florian oscillant entre récit et morale fragilité et regret ne pouvait que séduire Benjamin Rabier. Contrairement à ses illustrations précédentes les dessins qui furent réalisés ici accompagnent les fables non comme des scènes illustrées mais comme des enluminures au moyen de raccourcis et de gros plans qui donnent une note plus moderne à son travail lui qui avait déjà illustré trente ans plus tôt 1904 les Fables de La Fontaine mais de manière plus conventionnelle. Handsome interior condition despite a tear on the illustrated front page of No. 24 from December 9 1899. Le Journal amusant was a French weekly publication created by Charles Philipon on January 5 1856 in 8 grand-folio pages and disappeared perhaps in December 1933 representing 86 years of publication. The journal consisted three-quarters of illustrations focusing on social satire then comedy of manners with an increasing place given to theater and fashion. In the 1860s the editor-in-chief was Nadar. Numerous illustrations by Charles Léandre Henriot Ferdinand Bac Luc H.
