Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and minor age toning to the extremities. Small closed tears to the page edges of the first and last few pages including the contents page. Undated dated from inscription from previous owner. This edition is notable for featuring one hundred woodcut illustrations alongside two hundred and two fables. These fables include titles such as "The Frog and the Ox" "The Peacock and the Crane" "The Lion in Love" "The Wolf and the Lamb" "The Fox Without a Tail" "The Fox and the Lion" The Wolf and the Crane" "The Wolves and the Sheep" "The Cock and the Jewel" and "The Boy and the Nettle" to name a few. This copy has 14 pages of the publisher's advertisements to rear cataloguing their popular novels priced at one shilling each. Aesop was a storyteller who is thought to have lived in ancient Greece around the 6th century BCE. He is best known for his collection of fables featuring anthropomorphic animals that illustrate moral lessons of honesty wisdom and kindness. Heavy wear to the leather along the edges spine and hinges with chipping and loss. Heavy cracking to the spine with loss of leather to the head and tail. Ursula written on the rear cover. Covers very tenuously attached. Text block very shaky with many leaves tenuously bound in. All endpapers missing up to the title page. Names and doodles on the inside covers.
