President John Adams wrote of this literary anthology that it was "worthy to be presented by every father to every child, and deserve a place in every family. " Gomez's Jewish affiliation resonates in the book with his decision to include a selection from The History of Pope Pius V, which is the source for the "pound of flesh" incident in Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice. As opposed to Shakespeare's telling, in the History of Pope Pius V, it is the Jew who is the victim and the Christian who threatens him. Gomez prefaced the selection by writing: "The following subject shows that Shakespeare altered the character of Shylock, making him to be of the Jewish nation, when in reality he was not. " As Louis Harap notes (The Image of the Jew in American Literature, p. 260) , "Gomez was obviously trying to combat the effects of the Shylock stereotype. " Isaac Gomez (1768-1831) , whose great-grandfather had fled from Portugal to New York in 1703, was active in New York's Jewish community. The few early literary contributions by American Jews "was anything but impressive, but Gomez's book is worth remembering as one of American Jewry's earliest literary efforts⦠Gomez, both a devotee of the humanities and a committed Jew, lived comfortably ensconced in the two worlds of the Jew and the cultured American" (J. Joseph Krauskopf (1858 - 1923) was a prominent American rabbi, author, leader of Reform Judaism, founder of the National Farm School (now Delaware Valley University) , and long-time (1887-1923) rabbi at Reform Congregation Keneseth Israel (KI) , the oldest reform synagogue in Philadelphia which under Krauskopf, became the largest reform congregation in the nation. (Wikipeida, 2016) OCLC lists 4 copies of an earlier 1894 copy. (NYPL, JTS, UC Berkeley, HUC) , none of this 1900 edition. Wear throughout. Copy belonged to a child named Sadie Mendel and still has her name and book plate. Rare, perhaps unique surviving copy, from the evolving Reform approach to children's liturgy. Good condition. Title translates to Sixteen: A Collection of End Compositions of Sixteen Graduate of the Shalom Aleichem Elementary School in Chicago. Rare collection of writings from elementary-age boys and girls from secular-Yiddish Chicago schools but published in Warsaw; this copy signed by all but one of the young authors on their essays! The young Chicago writers include: Bashe Slabadkin, Nate Shechter, Mendel Zilberman, Hanah Kamski, Menuche Ben-Ami, Dabe Izrael, Yitsak Rozenfeld, Shulamit Malkin, Tsiril Gordin, Khayke Nayman, Sarah Veksler, Zalman Imianatof, Blume Miler, Chaim Miler, Motl Rozenblum, and Chanah Gekhtler. Yiddish schools in America were always supplemental schools, meeting several times a week after public schools. This was a major difference between the Yiddish schools in Poland which were, if chosen by the parents, the primary day school of the child, and the Yiddish schools in America which never developed a single Yiddish day school. On the political spectrum of the Yiddish cultural world in the 1920s and 1930s, the Sholem Aleichem Folk Institute and its schools, and the Yiddish camp, Camp Boiberik, were more to the right, with less emphasis on socialism and more stress on the humanistic values that can be learned from traditional Judaism and applied to the modern Jewish experience. Founded in 1918, the Institute lasted until the 1970s, and was a national movement which attained its greatest support in the 1930s (UTexas, 2017) . Both volumes are overflowing with gorgeous Yiddish modernist woodcut illustrations by Aharon Gudlman (1890-1978), with 15 full- or partial-page illustrations and 20 fanciful initial Yiddish letters in Volume I; and 12 full or partial page illustrations and 15 initial letters in Volume II. Detailed red bordering on each page add to the deluxe illustrated feel of the work as well. "Goodelman grew up in Russia and studied at an art school in Odessa. After graduating, he moved to New York and attended the Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design, working during the day to support himself. He traveled to Paris for a brief time, but was forced to return to America at the outbreak of World War I. He was a member of the Yiddish branch of the Communist Party, and art editor for YKUF, a Jewish cultural magazine. He...was a founding member of the Society of American Sculptors. Goodelman created sculptures in wood, metal, and stone, and illustrated many childrens books in English and Yiddish" (National Museum of American Art, 1996). "Chaver Paver" was the pen name of Gershon Einbinder. Einbinder was born on February 8, 1901 in Bershad (today in the Ukraine) . At the age of 19, he moved to Romania and eventually settled in the United States in 1924. He lived in New York and Los Angeles, where he died in 1964. Chaver Paver made his debut in Yiddish literature in the 1920s as a childrens writer. He wrote five volumes of childrens stories and several plays. Otherwise a good copy. Extremely rare first Armenian edition of Fenelon's "Telemaque". According to Abdolonyme Ubicini's account in his La Turquie actuelle (Paris 1855), Les Aventures de Télémaque was the most popular classic among Levantines in Istanbul in the first half of the 19th century, and it was translated into many languages besides Turkish and Arabic in the Ottoman Empire. The first printed version of a Greek translation dates from the 18th century, while an Armenian version by Ambroise Calfa was published in Paris in 1860. The translator, Ambroise Calfa Nar Bey, Guy de Lusignan, (1831-1906), was a Franco-Armenian historian and linguist from the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Ambroise Calfa is one of the three sons of Kévork (Georges) -Youssouf Calfa, an Armenian trader living in Constantinople, and Sophie Cantar (or Kantaroglou), daughter of an Armenian merchant or banker from the Ottoman capital. Member of several learned societies, including the Asian Society, Ambroise Calfa published several historical or linguistic works, including an Armenian Calligraphy (Paris, 1853), a work awarded at the Universal Exhibition of 1855, and, above all, an Armenian-French Dictionary ( Paris, Hachette, 1861) dedicated to Emperor Alexander II. Les Aventures de Télémaque, fils d'Ulysse (The adventures of Telemachus, son of Ulisses) with the original title is a didactic French novel by Fénelon, Archbishop of Cambrai, who in 1689 became tutor to the seven-year-old Duc de Bourgogne (grandson of Louis XIV and second in line to the throne). It was published anonymously in 1699 and reissued in 1717 by his family. The slender plot fills out a gap in Homer's Odyssey, recounting the educational travels of Telemachus, son of Ulysses, accompanied by his tutor, Mentor, who is revealed at the end of the story to be Minerva, goddess of wisdom, in disguise.
