Title translates to Sixteen: A Collection of End Compositions of Sixteen Graduate of the Shalom Aleichem Elementary School in Chicago. Rare collection of elementary-age writings from secular-Yiddish Chicago but published in Warsaw. Yiddish schools in America were always supplemental schools, meeting several times a week after public schools. This was a major difference between the Yiddish schools in Poland which were, if chosen by the parents, the primary day school of the child, and the Yiddish schools in America which never developed a single Yiddish day school. On the political spectrum of the Yiddish cultural world in the 1920s and 1930s, the Sholem Aleichem Folk Institute and its schools, and the Yiddish camp, Camp Boiberik, were more to the right, with less emphasis on socialism and more stress on the humanistic values that can be learned from traditional Judaism and applied to the modern Jewish experience. Founded in 1918, the Institute lasted until the 1970s, and was a national movement which attained its greatest support in the 1930s (UTexas, 2017) . Chagaynu (meaning Our Holidays) is a beautiful picture book drawn by Zeev Raban of the Bezalel Art School in Jerusalem. The book includes 14 plates featuring gorgeous color illustrations by Raban, all showing Jewish holidays throughout the year. Each illustration includes with it a poem by Israeli children's author and poet Levin Kipnis ("Avi-Shai"). Each color plate is protect by tissue guards. Text in Hebrew. Raban, the artist, is regarded as a leading member of the Bezalel school art style, in which artists portrayed both Biblical and Zionist themes in a style influenced by the European Jugendstil (similar to Art Nouveau) and by traditional Persian and Syrian styles. 'Ha-Bahur' (The Chosen One) , a grammar in the form of a tale for children, by Elijah Levita (1468-1549) : The relatively happy circumstances enjoyed by Elijah at Padua did not long continue. In 1509 the city was taken and sacked by the army of the League of Cambray, and Elijah, losing everything he possessed, had to leave the place. He betook himself to Rome, and having heard of the scholarly and liberal-minded Ægidius of Viterbo, general of the Augustine Order, who was studying Hebrew, he called upon him. This prelate, in exchange for Hebrew lessons from Elijah, offered to maintain him and his family. For thirteen years Elijah remained in the palace of the cardinal, writing works which spread his reputation, giving lessons in Hebrew, and, in turn, taking lessons in Greek from the cardinal. During this period Elijah produced the 'Sefer ha-Bahur, ' a grammatical treatise written at the request of the cardinal, to whom it was dedicated, and first published at Rome in 1518 (2d ed. Isny, 1542, and many subsequent reissues) . As the author explains in his preface, he called the work 'Bahur' because that was his surname, and further because the word denoted both 'youth' and 'excellent. ' The treatise is divided into four parts, each of which is subdivided into thirteen sections, corresponding to the thirteen articles of the Jewish creed; while the total number of sections, fifty-two, represents the numerical value of 'Elijah, ' his name. The first part discusses the nature of the Hebrew verbs; the second, the changes in the vowel-points of the different conjugations; the third, the regular nouns; and the fourth, the irregular ones. ... We have every work published consecutively by Moishe Glaser for the years 1957 through 1962; but do not have a later work - Fun di shames fun der alter kloyz - published in 1965, which ostensibly was published in a similar format. (FT) Cloth, small 8vo, 125 pages, in Yiddish. First edition. Zishe Weinper (pseudonym of Zise Weinperlech; 18931957) , was a Yiddish poet, short story writer, editor, and essayist. Weinper was born into a Hasidic family in Turisk (Ukraine) . His father was a cantor and a member of the Trisker rebbe's inner circle. As a youth, Weinper wandered throughout the Ukraine and Poland and in 1910 moved to Warsaw, where he began his literary career. In 1913 he emigrated to the U. S. , where he became associated with the Yiddish literary group Di Yunge. He continued his literary activities while also working as a house painter and elementary school teacher. In 1917, he edited the literary journal Der Onh eyb, which included his own works as well as those of his contemporaries such as B. J. Bialostotsky, Aaron Nissenson, and Naphtali Gross. In 1918, Weinper joined the British Jewish Legion and served in the Middle East. After returning to New York, he resumed publishing his poems, short stories, and essays in Yiddish publications such as Morgn-Zhurnal, Fraye Arbeter Shtime, and Tsukunft. The Depression of the early 1930s and the rise of Hitler in 1933 led him to join the radical left, and he became the poet and moving spirit of the Yidisher Kultur Farband, the leftist Yiddish cultural federation. His lyric volumes Poemen Vegn di Neviim (Poems about the Prophets, 1951) and Leyd un Freyd (Sorrow and Happiness, 1954) gave expression to his later, less optimistic moods (Jewish Virtual Library, 2012) .
