TSISHO (or CYSHO) refers to the Central Yiddish School Organization. At a conference in 1921 attended by 376 delegates, the Central Yiddish School Organization (CYShO) was formed, which included as its affiliates Yiddish schools of all trends. In 1921 there were, in 44 Polish cities, 69 Yiddish elementary schools and 35 kindergartens, having altogether 381 classes with 13, 457 children. The Polish government took a hostile position to these new secular Yiddish schools, but nevertheless freed their pupils from the obligation of attending other schools to meet the requirements of compulsory education. Various absurd police accusations were leveled against the schools. Schools were closed and teachers arrested or removed. Nevertheless the network of these CYShO schools grew. In 1925 their numbers reached 91 elementary schools with 455 classes and 16, 364 pupils; 3 secondary schools with 780 pupils. In 1929 there were 114 elementary schools with 17, 380 pupils, 46 kindergartens, 52 evening schools, 3 secondary schools, and 1 teachers' training seminary, a grand total of 216 institutions with 24, 000 pupils. The Polish government became ever more reactionary and antisemitic, which resulted in a quantitative decline in the schools, but their quality kept improving. The character of the CYShO school became crystallized; its educational approach included also the social and national upbringing of the child, attachment to his people, and an attitude of social responsibility. The methodology of instruction was in consonance with these objectives. The pride of the CYShO school movement was the children's sanatorium named after V. Medem . This was a great creative institution with many pedagogic achievements. On the eve of World War II it had 250 children, and the institution was open the entire year. He decided to become a writer at the age of 13, after seeing the Hebrew children's magazine "Haprachim" ("the flowers") . In his attic, he wrote, illustrated and produced his own magazine. Kipnis's writing is characterized by a light and happy style, devoid of pathos, yet rich and aesthetic. His collections in Hebrew encompass about 800 stories and 600 poems. One of several scarce printings of this item. The author explains Genesis, Exodus, Numbers, and portions of the Prophets and Judges. Questions for children follow each chapter. The author was a scholar and prominent New York Rabbi, one of the founders of the Conservative Jewish publication, The American Hebrew; and among the original members of the New York Board of Jewish Ministers, founded in 1881. A harsh contemporary review of this item: The Child's First Bible by F. De Sola Mendes. Here only the most startling and fanciful stories are given. Whatever is devoid of strangeness is either completely ignored or dismissed with a word. Thus out of the twenty chapters that the book comprises, one is given to the account of the Ten Plagues, while only a single word to the Ten Commandments. To Daniel also he devotes a whole chapter, while of the Prophets in Israel, whose careers were not spectacular like that of Elijah, Isaiah alone is given, and that only incidentally. Of the Judges, Samson is the favorite; and but for the author's gallantry, Deborah would not receive even honorary mention. Evidently, the Child's First Bible is a storybook, and as such it is a dismal failure. Despite the fact that it is written mainly in words of one and two syllables, it is deficient even in adaptation of language. Circumcision, Idolatrous, Prevailed, Conjurers are not a part of a young child's ordinary vocabulary. Besides, the book contains altogether too many proper names. Every other element of a good story for children is conspicuously absent. These facts compel the statement that The Child's First Bible should be the very last to be placed in the hands of the young child, for fear lest being the first it might be the last.
