The Verne piece "A Voyage in a Balloon" was translated from the French by Anne T. Wilbur. Taves and Michaluk V012 p 143 note that "This was apparently the first time Verne ever appeared in English . The assemblage also contains "The Iron Horse" and "A Poet Buying a Farm" both by Thoreau. These articles are notable for being early contributions to Thoreau's famous work "Walden Or Life in the Woods" published in 1854 which detailed his personal experiences and reflections near Walden Pond in Concord Massachusetts. Original red cloth decorated in black gilt and silver all edges gilt.

First Illustrated Edition of one of Verne's great mysterious tales of travel: César Cascabel and his family have made enough money to return home to France from California. Unfortunately their trip east is cut short when all their money is stolen. Their only option is to return to France by traveling west via Alaska the Bering Strait and Siberia. Along the way they encounter Mr. Sergius a Russian with his companion Kayette an Alaskan native both of whom join the band on their trip west. However Mr. Sergius has a secret which may jeopardize the safety of the family when they reach the Russian frontier. Kytasaari This was the only Verne title that first appeared in this binding -- the cartonnage "aux deux elephants" which some other tales shared but no other has some of the front cover panels in silver as here. Not only is this the earliest binding style for CÉSAR CASCABEL but also the ad catalogue at the rear is the earliest issue dated 1890-1891. This is a remarkably fine bright copy spine very slightly faded but much less than usual and with none of the usual foxing within -- of one of Hetzel's most extravagant bindings. An illustrated British edition was published by Sampson Low in 1880 and an authorized illustrated American edition was published by E. P. 1877105151877. Translated by W. H. G. Kingston. With Numerous Illustrations. London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1877. 24 pp ads dated Oct 1876. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt beveled all edges gilt. First British Edition of this historical tale of adventure taking place during a Siberian revolt. The first publication in English in October 1876 was in a wrappered American edition by Frank Leslie; this U.K. edition profusely illustrated and in a handsome pictorial binding came out two months later in December 1876 despite the 1877 date on the title page. It is noteworthy that MICHAEL STROGOFF is listed in this October ad catalogue -- though that does not mean that the book had necessarily been published by then. The binding of this copy is one of two variants priority unknown: both have the same front cover and spine pictorial panels but the front cover of this copy includes "Jules Verne" but not "The Courier of the Czar" while some copies show the opposite and the spine has a variant gilt panel behind the title. The publisher's monogram blind-stamp on the rear cover is also in a different style than on some copies. This is a near-fine copy with minor rubbing at the extremities but overall with very little wear or soil; atypically for this hefty volume the delicate original pale yellow endpapers are not cracked. This first British edition is quite uncommon and does not seem to turn up in any better condition. Taves & Michaluk V015; Edwards 15. unknown books
