Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt. First Illustrated Edition of this curious tale. Wealthy Chinaman hears that his fortune is lost. Opts for honorable suicide by arranging for a friend to kill him. Learns that his fortune isn't lost after all. Tells friend thanks but there is no need to kill him. Friend replies that he has already arranged for some thug to do the deed and now can't contact him. This Dutton edition was actually published in October 1880 exactly a year after Lee and Shepard of Boston published the first edition in English which was unillustrated and was in a plain binding. Although this Dutton edition comes from the British sheets including the same binding design the same plates and even an ad leaf for Verne's works with prices in sterling it was published a month earlier than Sampson Low's first British edition. Page size: 11-3/4 inches x 5-15/16 inches; 4 leaves colophon printed on gray paper mounted on inside rear cover. Bound by Mark Lintott: leporello style but on the vertical original screen prints by Judith Rothchild in subtle shades of gray on the front and back boards with gray silk ribbon pull at bottom of front board housed in publisher's clamshell box of gray paper title printed in black on front panel lined with screen prints made by Rothchild in shades of gray fine. <br/> Jules Verne's poem was written in 1848 when the author was just 20. The poem literally passes through a storm before reaching safe haven on the other side. The text is superimposed on a series of four of Rothchild's ominous mezzotints which start with a threatening sky go to the complete blackness of the storm and then to clouds quickly moving to sunlight. The text is hand set and letterpress printed in Vendome romain on an Albion press by Mark Lintott. Considering world events of 1848 Verne shows himself to be an optimist with this moving verse admirably served by Rothchild's handsome images which really give a sense of the speed and drama of the storm. A late work by this master of science fiction and adventure first published posthumously. <br/><br/>This action-packed novel features piracy in the South Atlantic and the desperate measures undertaken by men stranded on a small island home to the southern-most lighthouse in the world. The Lighthouse at the End of the World was inspired by the real lighthouse at the southern tip of Argentina. Verne's novel was later adapted into the 1971 film The Light at the Edge of the World. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt beveled all edges gilt. First British Edition of this historical tale of adventure taking place during a Siberian revolt. The first publication in English in October 1876 was in a wrappered American edition by Frank Leslie; this U.K. edition profusely illustrated and in a handsome pictorial binding came out two months later in December 1876 despite the 1877 date on the title page. It is noteworthy that MICHAEL STROGOFF is listed in this October ad catalogue -- though that does not mean that the book had necessarily been published by then. The binding of this copy is one of two variants priority unknown: both have the same front cover and spine pictorial panels but the front cover of this copy includes "Jules Verne" but not "The Courier of the Czar" while some copies show the opposite and the spine has a variant gilt panel behind the title. The publisher's monogram blind-stamp on the rear cover is also in a different style than on some copies. This is a near-fine copy with minor rubbing at the extremities but overall with very little wear or soil; atypically for this hefty volume the delicate original pale yellow endpapers are not cracked. Dutton the same year although the latter has a title page dated 1881. This 1889 Lee and Shepard and Dillingham edition is a reissue of their 1879 edition with with the illustrations by Benett that first appeared in the Sampson Low and Dutton editions. Count Dakkar Lionel Barrymore the benevolent scientist-leader of a volcanic island is attacked by the evil despot Baron Falon Montagu Love leading to a submarine chase in which they discover a race of water-bound humanoids. <br/><br/>Fraught with a difficult production the film began shooting in 1926 but due to various problems it would take three more years before its 1929 release. Lauded as an impressive cinematic feat the astronomical price tag over $1 million in 1929 all but guaranteed the film would be a financial disaster at the box office turning studios off science fiction for many years. <br/><br/>"The Mysterious Island" was at the forefront of multiple technological advances a part-talkie film shot entirely in Technicolor. All color copies were believed lost but in 2013 one existing color print was discovered in Prague and has since been restored through a collaboration between US film experts and the Czech National Film Archive. <br/><br/>8 x 10 inches.
