One map. <br/><br/>Publishers ochre cloth front cover pictorially decorated in red and black title lettered in gilt rear cover decoratively bordered in blind spine pictorially decorated in red and black and lettered in gilt blue-gray floral endpapers. The mildest of rubbing to the extremities internally immaculate a near fine and untouched copy.<br/><br/>The scarcest of all Verne first editions. Only two copies have come to auction within the last thirty-six years one rebound the other "becoming loose."<br/><br/>Published in September 1883 a month before George Munro's pirated "Seaside Library" edition.<br/><br/>The Green Ray was something of a departure for Verne a love story set in Scotland wherein a girl refuses to marry the man her uncles have chosen for her unless she sees the mysterious "green ray" which would tell her it is true love. After numerous failed attempts the phenomenon eventually becomes visible but the couple gazing into each other's eyes miss it. Green flashes or rays are actual optical phenomena that occur shortly after sunset or before sunrise when a green spot is visible for a short period of time above the sun or a green ray shoots up from the sunset point. It is usually observed from a low altitude where there is an unobstructed view of the horizon such as on the ocean. <br/><br/>Taves & Michaluk V023. Myers 31. Original ochre cloth pictorially decorated in brown black and green. First British Edition and first edition in English. This tale is a bit different from many of Verne's -- a love story sited in Scotland though as always with its share of scientific imponderables a girl refuses to marry the man her uncles have chosen for her unless she sees the mysterious "green ray" which would tell her it is true love. The front cover shows Helena and Oliver with eyes fixed upon one another while the crowd behind them has all eyes fixed upon "the green ray." This British edition was published in September 1883 -- a month before George Munro's pirated version in his wrappered "Seaside Library"; there was no American hardbound edition of this Verne tale until 1965. In our experience THE GREEN RAY is one of the very few toughest UK first editions of Jules Verne to find today: why we do not know but several others that followed THE GREEN RAY are close in scarcity KERABAN THE INFLEXIBLE of 1884 MATHIAS SANDORF of 1886 A LOTTERY TICKET of 1886 THE CLIPPER OF THE CLOUDS of 1887 NORTH AGAINST SOUTH of 1887 THE PURCHASE OF THE NORTH POLE of 1890 A FAMILY WITHOUT A NAME of 1890 and FOUNDLING MICK of 1895. This copy is in ochre cloth; the one other color we have seen is mauve-grey -- both with the same pictorial design mauve-grey we have seen both with and without gilt pages edges; ochre we have seen only without as here. The ad catalogue in this copy is dated November 1882 -- almost a year before publication -- which is the earliest GREEN RAY ad catalogue we have seen the others being Sept 1883 and Oct 1884. This is a very good copy quite attractive externally but recased within its original binding with stiffened spine and with black tape along the original endpapers' hinges; there is an 1899 school prize inscription on the front endpaper verso. In a very bright Near Fine jacket publisher clipped on the four corners but retaining the original price. A late work by this master of science fiction and adventure first published posthumously. <br/><br/>This action-packed novel features piracy in the South Atlantic and the desperate measures undertaken by men stranded on a small island home to the southern-most lighthouse in the world. The Lighthouse at the End of the World was inspired by the real lighthouse at the southern tip of Argentina. Verne's novel was later adapted into the 1971 film The Light at the Edge of the World. The Scribner Armstrong edition is dated 1875 on the title page but the book was issued in late October 1874. It was copyrighted 26 October 1874 and Scribner Armstrong filed two deposit copies on 31 October 1874. WRECKED IN THE AIR the first of three parts of THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND was issued simultaneously in cloth and in pictorial wrappers the latter binding state now rarely encountered. WRECKED IN THE AIR the only part of THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND issued by Scribner Armstrong in a two-column format perhaps utilizing the plates of the SCRIBNER'S MONTHLY MAGAZINE printing was rushed into print to compete with the 1874 Shepard piracy. Octavo three volumes in the original publisher's pictorial cloth all edges gilt illustrated with engravings including tissue-guarded frontispieces. Translated from the French by W.H.G. Kingston. Each volume is in very good condition. Ownership inscriptions. A very sharp set. Often referred to as the "Father of Science Fiction" French novelist Jules Verne had a wide influence on on the literary avant-garde and on surrealism. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages Extraordinaires a widely popular series of scrupulously researched adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth 1864 Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea 1870 and Around the World in Eighty Days 1873. Verne's The Mysterious Island is a crossover sequel to Verne's famous Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and In Search of the Castaways though its themes are vastly different from those books. An early draft of the novel initially rejected by Verne's publisher and wholly reconceived before publication was titled Shipwrecked Family: Marooned with Uncle Robinson indicating the influence of Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and Johann David Wyss' Swiss Family Robinson on the thematic structure of the trilogy. In September of 1875 Sampson Low Marston Low and Searle published the first British edition of Mysterious Island in three volumes entitled Dropped from the Clouds The Abandoned and The Secret of the Island. Count Dakkar Lionel Barrymore the benevolent scientist-leader of a volcanic island is attacked by the evil despot Baron Falon Montagu Love leading to a submarine chase in which they discover a race of water-bound humanoids. <br/><br/>Fraught with a difficult production the film began shooting in 1926 but due to various problems it would take three more years before its 1929 release. Lauded as an impressive cinematic feat the astronomical price tag over $1 million in 1929 all but guaranteed the film would be a financial disaster at the box office turning studios off science fiction for many years. <br/><br/>"The Mysterious Island" was at the forefront of multiple technological advances a part-talkie film shot entirely in Technicolor. All color copies were believed lost but in 2013 one existing color print was discovered in Prague and has since been restored through a collaboration between US film experts and the Czech National Film Archive. <br/><br/>8 x 10 inches. 1876146271876. a handsome set Together three volumes. Translated from the French by W.H.G. Kingston. Second Edition. London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1876. 3 pp undated ads in Part III. Original green cloth pictorially decorated in black and gilt. First English Edition second impression of all three volumes that were sold separately but which together form one of Verne's greatest tales. The translation unfortunately was effected by W.H.G. Kingston whose translation changed the hero's name from Smith to Harding. Further Kingston abridged or omitted many of the technical passages indicating the castaway's scientific development of the island. Verne's anti-imperialist sentiments expressed by the dying Captain Nemo were also reversed by Kingston so as not to offend English readers. Unfortunately Kingston's became the standard translation to this day inflicting his omissions and distortions on English-language readers. T&M Sampson Low's first edition all three volumes dated 1875 in a variety of cloth colors came out in September 1875. T&M records their second impression as coming out in February 1879 -- but here we have the second impression of all three volumes with "Second Edition" on each title page all dated 1876. The three Sampson Low first impressions seldom turn up on the market as a set especially in the same color cloth; these second impressions only in green are quite scarce as well as evidenced by T&M's not having seen them. In any event this is a handsome matched set of the English second impression page edges plain the first impression's page edges were gilded. All three volumes are in attractive just-about-fine condition with scarcely any external soil or wear only the very slightest of rubbing at the edges; a few leaves at each end of each volume have light foxing; even the original delicate peach-colored endpapers are clean and uncracked. Given the extreme scarcity of the first impressions over several decades we have offered only one set in this condition at $22500 this set of second impressions is highly collectible.
