In 1870 he was invited by several students to join them on a four week camping trip to Yosemite and the High Sierra. This trip was his first visit to Yosemite which began a lifetime love affair with preserving the Valley. While John Muir is more closely associated with promoting the establishment of national parks Le Conte was instrumental in laying the foundations for the Yosemite National Park in 1890. He co-founded the Sierra Club with John Muir. He died in Yosemite of a heart attack in 1901.

Francis Peloubet Farquhar 1887-1974 was a mountaineer environmentalist historian author and certified public accountant.
