This is the first edition of the English translation done by English theologian Israel Tonge 1621-1680 himself a vehement anti-Catholic and conspiracy theorist whose fabricated manuscript of Jesuit treachery was used by Titus Oates to instigate the Popish Plot. Some moderate crumple to the front flyleaves but does not compromise any text. Vintage note written in French taped to the recto side opposite the title page. Pages are predominantly free from marginalia except for the name of a previous owner written in ink within the front pastedown also presumed from the period. All edges have toned as expected. Even as several areas throughout bear light dampstain and pages hold a slight wave the leaves have absolutely beautifully and evenly toned with very little foxing or discoloration for being over 350 years old. 1688032445<p>London: Printed by Joseph Streater for sale by T Basset J Robinson B Aylmer Joh Southby And W Canning 1688 A very good copy of this important work on comparative anatomy with engraved title; rubricated title and 30 plates. The original publication had 2 separate parts both complete in themselves - the second section 'The Measure of the Earth' translated by Richard Waller is not present. Alexander Pitfeild undertook to translate this work originally led by Charles Perrault for the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris. Animals mostly from the royal menageries at Vincennes and Versailles were supplied to the Royal Academy for detailed study and dissection. The first publication including 13 species appeared in 1671 with a second volume 5 years later. The publications had very short print runs and were very expensive being elephant folio with detailed art work mainly by Sebastien Leclerc. There was a growing desire to learn about natural history and the nature of animals and copies of Perrault's work were almost impossible to obtain. Pitfeild's translation was much needed and it became the only work published on comparative anatomy in England between 1660 and 1700. Richard Waller undertook the illustrations copying Leclerc but reducing the size taking care to keep the drawings in proportion. The second part missing here was undertaken not because it was linked in any way but because it was important and of interest to the Royal Society. Copies of Pitfeild's translation are extremely scarce. This copy is in a new binding with cloth spine with title label and paper-covered boards. LeClerc and on rear pastedown to the state of the engravings. <br/><br/>First Edition and second publication dealing with the comparative anatomy of the animals the chameleon the beaver the camel the bear and the gazelle. Perrault scientist and naturalist was the leader of a team of comparative anatomists called the Parisians that included Guichard-Joseph Duverney Jean Pecquet Moyse Charas and Philippe de la Hire. Their investigations began in June 1667 with a thresher shark and lion from the royal academy and went on to encompass forty-nine vertebrate species. The detailed reports and exact descriptions on these dissections were the first of a long series of anatomical descriptions which ultimately included those of twenty-five species of mammals seventeen birds five reptiles one amphibian and one fish. Perrault and the team of Parisians prided themselves on several discoveries and in the process debunked many popular myths attached to certain species such as the legend that salamanders live in fire or that chameleons subsist on air. The scientists also recorded how they obtained their results providing a glimpse of how such anatomical research was conducted in the seventeenth century. The work is illustrated beautifully with five large folding plates by the expert painter engraver and writer Sebastian Leclerc 1637-1714 four of which were engraved by Leclerc and one by the watercolor painter writer and printmaker Abraham Bosse c. 1604-1676. Very fine work; the large folding plates remain fresh and intact. No such detailed and exact descriptions and illustrations had been published before.
