1843W1002137Paris: L. Curmer 1843. Dark green morocco spine and tips 4 raised bands gilt. Green marbled boards all edges sprinkled red. Some shelfwear and bumping on edges especially bottom of lower cover though this is a very sturdy binding. Spine expertly repaired with original spine laid down. Top corner of lower cover is new and beautifully matched to other tips. An engraved title page dated 1842 appears followed by the usual 1843 title page. Owner bookplates one over the other on front pastedown. Endpapers and pastedowns have some staining which extends into margins of book not affecting text or plates. First page of Sleeping Beauty repaired at top with Japanese paper. Heavily illustrated with Blanchard engravings after Paquet Marvy Jeanron Jacque and Beauce. All of Perrault's most famous fairy tales included beautifully illustrated both in full page and in text. Probably the finest Perrault work extant. First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Benjamin Tabart's very scarce 1804 edition of Charles Perrault's classic fairy tale the first separate printing of this work in English. This is a very scarce early single volume English language edition of the classic tale; Tabart is known to have printed sixteen editions in 1804 alone all of which are now very scarce. This is the sixth edition from Tabart published in the same year as their first.Illustrated with a hand-coloured copper plate frontispiece and with one further hand coloured plate. Collated lacking the third plate referred to by the title page.Ink inscriptions to verso of front wrap and recto of rear wrap.With a publisher's advertisement to the verso of the title page.Jisc lists only three institutionally held copies of this work: eleventh and twelfth editions held by the University of Cambridge and a fourteenth edition held by the V&A Museum libraries. In the original paper wraps. Paper repair to back strip. Original title label to front wrap detaching to head and with spotting. Spotting and handling marks to wraps. The text of the tales is entirely engraved in italics and superbly printed on strong laid paper. The illustrations in the text are finely engraved on steel they are due to the imagination of Pauquet Marvy Jeanron Jacque Beaucé Jules Compagnon and engraved by Monin. The 15-page notice on the life and works of Perrault by Paul Jacob appeared for the first time in the 1836 edition the same is true for the dissertation in fine on fairy tales. One general title in bistre and 9 frontispieces in bistre; each page of each tale entirely engraved with text and composition framing the text or as headpieces tailpieces. Publisher's binding in half dark green shagreen. Spine with false raised bands richly decorated with ornate compartments. All edges gilt. White glazed watered paper for the endpapers. Signs of rubbing. 2 frontispieces partly detached. Some small scattered foxing on paper that is quite white with full margins. A handsome copy. ""It is one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the 19th century and perhaps the rarest in fine condition."" Carteret Le trésor du bibliophile romantique et moderne. This edition is very rare and is encountered only very infrequently just like the one published by Curmer it found itself as Carteret affirms in the hands of children with little bibliophilic sense. On plate 9 paper is missing which circles the plate in a border. On plate 12 the black part has a small scratch this part encircling the medallion which is projected by the lantern. A choice selection of the best-known French fairy tales A charming illustrated selection from the most important corpus of fairy tales published in the 18th century Le Cabinet des fées published in 41 volumes in 1785-9. The first volume prints the eight famous tales by Charles Perrault originally published as Histoires ou Contes du temps passé 1697: "Le Petit Chaperon rouge" "Les Fées" "La Barbe-bleue" "La Belle au bois dormant" "Le Chat botté" "Cendrillon" "Riquet à la houppe" and "Le Petit Poucet". The concluding tale is "L'Adroite princesse" by Perrault's niece Marie-Jeanne L'Héritier. The second volume has three more Perrault tales "Griselidis" "Peau d'Âne" and "Les Souhaits ridicules" together with "Persinette" by Mademoiselle de La Force "Incarnat Blanc et Noir" attributed to Chevalier de Mailly "Kadour" a tale set in Kashmir and "Les Deux Pantoufles". Interactive fairy tales An attractive moveable book for children comprising the tales of Little Red Riding Hood Riquet on the Hoop and Tom Thumb with two colour backdrops into which the young reader could insert a sequence of cut-out figures to illustrate the story as it progressed. The book was first published in 1820 by Lambert Nepveu et Lefuel. This is the subsequent printing by Pintard and Letaille in circa 1837. Oblong duodecimo. Rear of book with folding flaps enclosing 2 hand-coloured and varnished plates with slits to insert hand-coloured cut-out subjects of which there are here 25 26 were issued; folding plate illustrating how to place the figurines. Original pink boards engraved pictorial title card to front cover. Very light soiling rear inner hinge split light foxing to contents. A very good copy. Not in Gumuchian. hardcover

Joints a little worn though nicely refurbished a four-inch superficial scratch on rear board but A VERY FINE COPY--the striking binding with lustrous leather and glittering gilt; the contents entirely clean fresh and bright; and the margins vast.<br/> <br/> This grandly proportioned bibliophile's edition of Perrault's fairy tales is sumptuous to the last detail with lush facsimile watercolor illustrations and a binding by a leading French artisan. Charles Perrault 1628-1703 reworked traditional folklore into sophisticated fairy tales for the denizens of the intellectual salons of Paris ending each story with a usually cynical moral in couplets. He is credited with inventing the fairy tale genre and the Brothers Grimm--not to mention Walt Disney--profited greatly from his oeuvre. These two publications include three of his best-known tales--Cinderella Bluebeard and Sleeping Beauty--alongside the lesser-known "Les Fées.†Literally translated as “The Fairies†but generally called "Diamonds and Toads" in English this fourth tale features a pair of sisters who meet a fairy in disguise and are rewarded or punished based on their behavior toward her. The son of a sculptor our illustrator Charles-Édouard de Beaumont 1812-88 had initially trained to follow in his father's footsteps but instead became a painter illustrator and lithographer working across genres and media through his career. He is best known for his watercolors and for his work to encourage the popularity of the medium; in 1879 he co-founded the Society of French Watercolorists with Jehan Georges Vibert. Benezit tells us that "as a watercolourist . . . his style is highly individual and personal and it may be claimed that his work broke new ground." This is evident in the present artworks where the characters--charming comical and terrifying--are depicted with graceful linework and gentle washes of color. Beaumont's artwork interacts physically with the text which is sometimes obscured behind a painted curl of smoke or pushed out of the way by the feet of the optimistic suitors of Cinderella's prince. Beaumont had a love for historical weaponry his collection was donated to the Museum of Cluny after his death and he depicted the knives and swords in the famous tale of the murderer Bluebeard with an almost gleeful accuracy of detail that clearly demonstrates his interest. The imposing binding with lacy detail calling to mind the decorations of the era in which Perrault first published these stories is the work of Henri Noulhac. Described as "a superlative craftsman" by Duncan & De Bartha who reproduce four of his bindings in their "Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding" Noulhac 1866-1931 was born in Chateauroux where he served his apprenticeship. He afterwards moved in 1894 to Paris where he established his atelier at 10 rue de Buci and gained a reputation as one of the foremost binders and gilders of his generation. In addition to the binding and the illustrations here the condition of this volume needs to be highlighted--the book seems to be fresh from the binder's atelier untouched by any reader. Twelve tales in all. <br /> This is copy number 5 of only ten copies on Vergé paper with two states of the full-page engravings one of each a mounted proof before letters on Chine. Inspired by the fables of La Fontaine Perrault began writing his own. His Accounts began their career in 1695 "as a five-story presentation manuscript dedicated to Princess Élizabeth-Charlotte Louis XIV's niece" Clute & Grant 752. When first published two years later the book contained eight stories.
