Sturge Moore. A limited edition copy of two hundred and thirty printings of this work. A very scarce volume. Comprising a popular tale the most famous version by Charles Perrault Histoire de Peau d'Ane Donkey Skin originally published in 1694. According to Ruth B. Bottigheimer this would be the first written French fairy tale classing among folktales of Aarne-Thompson.An Eragny press edition. This publisher active between 1896 and 1914 specialised in small handmade books in limited prints with stunning wood engravings. It produced a total of thirty two titles. Founded by Lucien Pissarro the publications were inspired by the works of the Kelmscott Press. Pissarro was a great printmaker and wood engraver himself he worked in France for about thirty years before he moved to Britain.With three engravings by T. Surge Moore and frontispiece by L. Pissarro. in the original publisher's paper covered boards with title stamped in gilt to front board and spine. Externally sound with slight shelfwear and rubbing to head and tail of spine. Slight handling marks to boards. William S. Argent's bookplate to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Magnificent and striking Art Deco full morocco binding by J. Lambert of a lush edition of the most classic fairy tale. No. 25 of 30 copies with illustrations in two states apart from text as well as several of the 39 illustrations shown in their progressive stages of the coloring process. states but then also presented as a progressive with the each step of the coloring process presented. 4to. 24.5 by 16.5 cm. Although the story is short with pagination running from 1 to 33 with the last page not paginated and there are two pages of verse two pages describing the pagination the book is thick thanks to the thickness of the paper -- the leaves could fairly be described as of a card stock. There are about 140 leaves in all with heavy gilt edges. Original wraps bound in. Notwithstanding the occasional light fox mark we can comfortably grade this copy as Fine. The slipcase remains very solid. Its paper pastedown does have a few scratches and spme schmutz. Jean Porson unknown

Original quarter contrasting plain and patterned papered boards lettered in gilt; edges uncut and partially unopened; covers lightly sunned and rubbed with brown marks to the rear cover apparently from prolonged contact with another book; endpapers browned; a very good copy internally in fine condition. One of only 230 copies of which 200 were offered for sale printed at the Eragny Press of Lucien and Esther Pissarro. The title vignette and two illustrations were drawn and engraved by T. Sturge Moore; the frontispiece borders and initials were designed by Lucien and engraved by him and Esther. This is the fourteenth book of the press. A collection of classics children's French fairy tales including 'Puss in Boots' 'Princess Rosette' 'Green Dragon' 'The Fairy Song' and more. These stories show the beginning of the trend for fairy tales which have reminded at the forefront of literature since the seventeenth century. The stories were written by Charles Perrault Madame d'Aulnoy and Count Anthony Hamilton. Perrault is known to have laid the foundation for the literary genre of fairy tales with his publication 'Histoires ou Contes de Temps Passe' of which the best known 'Puss in Boots' is included in this volume. d'Aulnoy is known for coining the phrase 'fairy-tales' and she names her works 'Contes de Fees'. Hamilton was a soldier as well as a writer and was exiled from France for siding with James II against the Prince of Orange. Illustrated by Edmund Dulac a well known book illustrator of natural sciences. His first commision was to illustrated editions of the Bronte novels. He also illustrated many fairy tales such as 'The Sleeping Beauty' and a collection of stories by Hans Christian Andersen. A colourful collection of old French fairy tales illustrated throughout. In the original publisher's quarter vellum binding with cloth to the boards. Externally smart. Light discolouration and marks to the vellum as is usual. A few light marks to the boards. Lucien became acquainted with the Arts and Crafts movement in the 1890s and founded the Eragny Press in 1894. Perrault's telling of the folk tale of Donkey Skin was published in 1695. The Pissarros produced over 30 books at the Eragny Press their productions notable for their woodcuts and the Pissarros' focus on the interplay of illustration and text. Thomas Sturge-Moore the poet playwright and designer was introduced to the Pissarros in 1891 by Charles Ricketts of the Vale Press and became a regular choice for the Eragny Press's illustrations.
