He then leaves Basel for Cluny while his family remained behind in penury and he does not return until 1499 when he retires ; this publication amongst the earliest for Basle is of the celebrated work of William of Auvergne ca. 1180-1271 : the Summa de Virtutibus or The Summation of Virtues the first of the famous two-part tract whose second part published separately treats of the vices. William was born in the former Province of Auvergne about 1180 and by 1223 he was master of theology at the University of Paris and a canon at Notre Dame. He was consecrated Bishop and given the See of Paris in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX and he remained there until his death in 1249. The Summa de Virtutibus et Viitis On the Virtues and Vices a massive work is itself part of a much larger work the Magisterium Divinale et Sapientiale The Teaching on God in the Mode of Wisdom. The style of the work is somewhat rambling moving off into many tangents as it explores related concepts and makes the work appear as an extemporaneous discourse often making a point and then immediately raising objections to that point which William then proceeds to refute. It was reprinted many times and was a monumental Dominican theological work. name variants for William of Auvergne: Guilelmus Peraldus Guillermus Parisiensis Guilielmus Peraldus Guilelmus Peraldus Guillaume Perrault Guilelmus Peraldus Willelmi de Peraldo Wilhelm Peraldus Guilelmus de Petra Alda Guillaume de Peyraud Ardeche G. Engraved portrait frontispiece of Claude Perrault in first volume. Contemporary French calf spines gilt edges red; some occasional browning; repairs to joints some rubbing. Unidentified armorial bookplate to front pastedown beneath monogrammed bookplate D.P. with chipmunk and two mice. A later reduced format edition of Perraults Memoires of 1671-1676 Perraults study of this nature was first published in 1669 with the results of investigations of five animals and later expanded with studies of over forty animals. Prior to 1670 most descriptions of animals paid little attention to their internal structure and there were very few images in natural history encyclopedias that depicted skeletons or muscles. That changed with the establishment of the Académie des Sciences in Paris in 1666 by Jean-Baptiste Colbert with the approval of King Louis XIV. The Academy functioned with neither statutes nor regulations until 1699. At that time the Academy used the term mathématique to encompass the fields that are now called astronomy mathematics and physics and the term physique to encompass the fields that are now called anatomy botany zoology and chemistry. In January 1699 Louis reorganized the Academy giving it first regulations. The effect was to give the King more control over their activities in exchange for becoming an official institution under his protection with the new name Académie Royale des Sciences. One of the original academicians the physician Claude Perrault organized regular sessions at which participants could dissect deceased animals from Louis XIVs royal menagerie and record all they observed. Lions chameleons bears gazelles wolves ostriches crocodiles monkeys eagles tigers porcupines and salamanders among some were all laid open by the academics scalpels. These superb folding plates record in great detail the pioneering work at the Academy. These three volumes in three parts focus on the transformative and foundational years of the French Royal Academy of Sciences and Claude Perraults efforts which had made comparative anatomy a vital tool for the classifying naturalist.

Par La Compagnie des Libraires hardcover

Charles Perrault 1628-1703 reworked traditional folklore into sophisticated fairy tales for the denizens of the intellectual salons of Paris ending each story with a usually cynical moral in couplets. He is credited with inventing the fairy tale genre and the Brothers Grimm--not to mention Walt Disney--profited greatly from his oeuvre. These two publications include three of his best-known tales--Cinderella Bluebeard and Sleeping Beauty--alongside the lesser-known "Les Fées.†Literally translated as “The Fairies†but generally called "Diamonds and Toads" in English this fourth tale features a pair of sisters who meet a fairy in disguise and are rewarded or punished based on their behavior toward her. The son of a sculptor our illustrator Charles-Édouard de Beaumont 1812-88 had initially trained to follow in his father's footsteps but instead became a painter illustrator and lithographer working across genres and media through his career. He is best known for his watercolors and for his work to encourage the popularity of the medium; in 1879 he co-founded the Society of French Watercolorists with Jehan Georges Vibert. Benezit tells us that "as a watercolourist . . . his style is highly individual and personal and it may be claimed that his work broke new ground." This is evident in the present artworks where the characters--charming comical and terrifying--are depicted with graceful linework and gentle washes of color. Beaumont's artwork interacts physically with the text which is sometimes obscured behind a painted curl of smoke or pushed out of the way by the feet of the optimistic suitors of Cinderella's prince. Beaumont had a love for historical weaponry his collection was donated to the Museum of Cluny after his death and he depicted the knives and swords in the famous tale of the murderer Bluebeard with an almost gleeful accuracy of detail that clearly demonstrates his interest. The imposing binding with lacy detail calling to mind the decorations of the era in which Perrault first published these stories is the work of Henri Noulhac. Described as "a superlative craftsman" by Duncan & De Bartha who reproduce four of his bindings in their "Art Nouveau and Art Deco Bookbinding" Noulhac 1866-1931 was born in Chateauroux where he served his apprenticeship. He afterwards moved in 1894 to Paris where he established his atelier at 10 rue de Buci and gained a reputation as one of the foremost binders and gilders of his generation. In addition to the binding and the illustrations here the condition of this volume needs to be highlighted--the book seems to be fresh from the binder's atelier untouched by any reader. This copy is from the first printing of 50 examples on thick paper and is not only much rarer than the general trade edition but is far superior in terms of quality.

Lucien Laforge was born in Paris in 1889 and was a staunch pacifist feigning lunacy twice to be discharged during WWI. He published a work in 1922 titled 'le film 1914' which satirised the conflict with grotesque cartoons blaming the horrors on the greed and stupidity of the wealthy elite. His simple and sometimes haunting style is also evident in his illustrations for fairy tales and was not considered fashionable at the time but displays the chilling legacy of the war. The bold black lines of his characters were incredibly progressive and appear almost cartoon-like.
Paris, La Sirène, 1920. unknown

Contenant beaucoup de particularités & d'Anecdotes intéressantes du ministère de M. Colbert. Avignon: Pierre Patte 1759.

First edition of the Memoirs by the author of Mother Goose's Tales very rare when preserved in an elegant ancient binding as our copy. Tchemerzine V 188

The Memoirs stop after the break with Colbert and were published by the architect Pierre Patte. Originally coming from the region of Tours but established in Paris the Perrault family belongs to a haute bourgeoisie of Robe with a modern and Jansenist sensibility whose sons are lawyer Jean receiver general of finances Pierre architect and doctor Claude or doctor in theology Nicolas. As for Charles if he seems to follow a banal course of a future robin brilliant literary studies at the college of Beauvais in Paris law degrees and registration at the bar in 1651 he actually breaks with the school institution. Then we see him trying to celebrate the great events of the kingdom: odes on peace on the occasion of the Treaty of the Pyrenees 1659 on the wedding of Louis XIV and Marie-Therese 1660 on the birth of the Dauphin 1661 with a controversial literary talent by Racine but with a growing political success to the point of appearing soon to the young King and his administrators as a great choice to carry out the cultural project of the reordering of France; while he is committed to the superintendence of the royal buildings Perrault who has proved again his encomiastic science Discours sur lacquisition de Dunkerque par le roi 1663 is appointed on the recommendation of Chapelain secretary of the Petite Academy future Académie des inscriptions et des belles-lettres. He is elected to the French Academy 1671 of which he became Chancellor at the death of Seguier 1672 and redefines its rules of operation. Its effectiveness is once again such that in the same year Colbert creates for him a tailor-made position the general control of the buildings. After the death of Colbert 1683 he is dismissed from his position of Controller General and excluded from the Petite Académie by Louvois; only remained Director of the Academy he is de facto placed in an almost total retreat at the age of fifty-five. Charles Perrault then devotes himself to the education of his children he was a widower since 1678 but more importantly resumes and deepens a religious reflection Épître chrétienne sur la pénitence praise of Louis XIV protector of the Catholic religion 1683 ode Aux nouveaux convertis 1685 etc. which will prove to be the ethical base of the upcoming Quarrel of the Ancients and the Moderns. As evidenced by his consultation with two religious former moderates Bossuet and Huet about his Saint Paulin évêque de Nole 1686 epic in six songs that appears to be followed by an epistle to Fontenelle Le Génie. On January 27 1687 the public reading of the Siècle de Louis XIV by Charles Perrault to the glory of the Moderns caused a quarrel between the Ancients and the Moderns to burst whose stakes exceed the controversies of their respective leaders Boileau and himself. In fact it will result in the reconciliation 1694 of those who probably were differently of the same opinion Boileau.
[Pierre Patte] hardcover

Claude Perrault 1613-1688 was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and a doctor of medicine and anatomist in the faculty at Paris; he designed the Paris Observatory and participated in the design of the east façade of the Louvre. His published works are evidence of a polymathic mind encompassing architecture physics and natural history. Fowler ranks the present work among "the scholarly editions of Vitruvius Fowler. By his own account Vitruvius served in the Roman army under the command of Julius Caesar. Rediscovered by the Florentine humanist Poggio Bracciolini 1380-1459 in the library of Saint Gall Abbey and publicized by Leon Battista Alberti 1404-1472 Vitruvius’ De Architectura would later define the canon of classical architecture. His assertion that structures should exhibit the three qualities of stability firmitatis utility utilitiatis and beauty venustatis became a commonplace in architectural theory. The wide-ranging program of De Architectura deals with “principles of buildings in general building materials designs of theatres temples and other public buildings town and country houses baths interior decoration and wall paintings clocks and dials astronomy mechanical and military engineering.†PMM. Throughout the Renaissance Vitruvius’ work provided inspiration for Michelangelo Leon Battista Alberti Donato Bramante Lorenzo Ghiberti Giacomo Vignola Andrea Palladio and many others.
