Publisher's cardboard box with the titles on the top board: 12 Superior English Made lantern slides. Handwritten: Red Riding Hood. Signs of rubbing on the box. A stop in the split lid at 2cm. On plate 9 paper is missing which circles the plate in a border. On plate 12 the black part has a small scratch this part encircling the medallion which is projected by the lantern. Otherwise collection in excellent condition. Millikin & Lawley carried out their trade in magic lanterns and plates between 1860 and 1900. Millikin & Lawley unknown

1679045233Paris: De L'Imprimerie Royale 1679. Second Edition. Hardcover Vellum. Good Condition. Willem Swidde. Contemporary full mottled calf gilt with arms of Louis XIV to both boards and royal cipher to spine; a slightly bungled stamp to the boards but a nice job on the spine but still very clearly the arms of Louis XIV 1638-1715 and a nice association of binding and book. Dry and cracked hinges weak but holding. Tide mark to bottom corner of the volume heavy at the beginning largely effecting the text but lightly to the plates as well. On Perrault's advise Louis XIV included 39 fountains in the gardens of Versailles each illustrating one of the fables of Aesop. The 41 plates here are of the 39 fountains plus a map of the garden and a view of the entrance. All vellum leather binding. Handwritten lettering on the spine presumably from the period. Printed on laid paper. Introductory pages contain advertisements preface table of contents all unpaginated. Illustrated with lovely ornamented engravings and flourishes in black and white throughout. The last unpaginated page contains "Fautes a corriger dans le corps du livre" or loosely translated "Errors to be corrected in the body of the book". Label on the spine bears the name "Inside endpapers show wear. Perrault" written in ink. Front hinge is weak yet binding is remarkably tight. Some moderate crumple to the front flyleaves but does not compromise any text. Vintage note written in French taped to the recto side opposite the title page. Pages are predominantly free from marginalia except for the name of a previous owner written in ink within the front pastedown also presumed from the period. All edges have toned as expected. Even as several areas throughout bear light dampstain and pages hold a slight wave the leaves have absolutely beautifully and evenly toned with very little foxing or discoloration for being over 350 years old. An absolutely gorgeous edition. Beautiful to add to any antiquarian book collection. <br><br>At over 3 lbs. due to the size and weight of this edition additional postage may be necessary.
