Philosophe moraliste, économiste et historien français, Joseph Droz devint professeur d'éloquence à l'École centrale de Besançon entre 1796 et 1803. Très bon exemplaire, très frais.

Originaire du Dauphiné, magistrat, défenseur des Lumières "en toutes matières" et un moment proche de Rousseau, Servan se prononce sur l'"état de Société". "Les moeurs sont le vrai fondement de la prospérité des Empires (...). Eloge de l'agriculture, premier des arts et critique du luxe (...). Ce qui forme un État, ce sont les hommes et le terrain (...). Servan conseille d'employer les soldats aux travaux publics" (INED, n° 4169). Bien complet de la belle planche gravée par Eisen de la mort qui fauche 'la sage vieillesse jouant avec l'aimable enfance & conduite doucement vers le trépas'. "Travail d'érudition remarquable par le savoir et la sagacité" sur l'origine et les filiations des religions grecques et romaines et leur évolution parallèle. Ce petit essai a été abondamment utilisé par les historiens de l'antiquité. (Conlon, 'Siècle des lumières', 55:620). Bon exemplaire.
