About The Author:- Sir George Abraham Grierson, (Jan. 7, 1851-March 9, 1941) Irish linguist, language scholar and civil servant who conducted the Linguistic survey of India (1898-1928), obtaining information on 364 languages and dialects. While a student of mathematics at Trinity College, Dublin, Grierson took prizes in Sanskrit and Hindi. Grierson went to Bengal in October 1873, where-in addition to carrying out his duties in a succession of government posts until 1898-he devoted much time to language research. Ancien proche de Rousseau, avocat général au Parlement de Dauphiné, philosophe, homme des Lumières appuyé par Voltaire, Michel Antoine Servan (1737-1807) se livre ici à une violente critique des Confessions. Il critique la sincérité du texte, dénonce une vision des événements toujours partiale et tournée à l’avantage de l’auteur et la mise en cause de trop nombreuses personnalités gravement diffamées, en particulier Madame de Warens. Contient également deux textes polémiques contre Rousseau de Charles Borde, dont la "Profession de foi philosophique" (p. 112 à 136) qui obtint le soutien de Voltaire, et "Prédiction tirée d'un vieux manuscrit" (p.137 à 147). (Conlon, 'Rousseau', n° 672). Petite tache au titre. Mors légèrement frottés. Ex-libris armorié: "A. Le Mareschal Beauvais". Très bon exemplaire, bien relié à l’époque.

L'auteur, l'avocat François Chas, répond au pamphlet d'un autre célèbre avocat Joseph Michel Antoine Servan, qui avait accusé Rousseau d'avoir dévoilé, avec ses propres erreurs, celles de Madame de Warens dans ses "Confessions". Chas livre un ardent plaidoyer, véritable hagiographie de Rousseau, sa personnalité et son oeuvre, martyr de son siècle, "proscrit, fugitif, errant, poursuivi par l'autorité et la cohorte philosophique", persécuté par les thuriféraires de l'athéisme, Diderot et Voltaire, luttant contre la décadence des esprits des lettres et des moeurs. (Conlon, 'Ouvrages français relatifs à Jean-Jacques Rousseau', n°702). Piqûres éparses. Bon exemplaire, entièrement non rogné.

"Réimprimé sept fois, cet ouvrage continuera d'exercer son influence pendant le siècle suivant. Il crut alors que la providence lui désignait un jeune anglais de passage à Paris, son ancien voisin à Wootton, et lui remit le manuscrit. Brooke Boothby le publia en Angleterre après la mort de Rousseau, conformément à ses engagements. Longtemps abordé comme un document clinique sur le "cas" Rousseau, il fallut attendre les dernières décennies du XXe siècle pour assister à une ample réévaluation de cette oeuvre, "d’une richesse longtemps insoupçonnée".
