En 1771, il fut nommé historiographe de France et participa, en 1788, à la seconde Assemblée des notables à Versailles. Père jésuite originaire de Besançon où il enseigna la philosophie, les mathématiques et la physique, Para Du Phanjas composa cette oeuvre encyclopédique de métaphysique à la suite d'un traité de physique ("Etres sensibles"). Dans cet ouvrage qui embrasse les grands domaines de la métaphysique (domaine des "êtres insensibles"), l'auteur réfute les doctrines philosophiques des Lumières, en utilisant les mêmes méthodes, arguments et jusqu'au vocabulaire de ses adversaires. Se refusant à la défense d'une foi obscurantiste, Para du Phanjas tente de "définir les principes et preuves irréfragables qui fondent cette religion en un cours méthodique".
