1802799591802. MICHAUX Francois. Andre. Travels to the Westward of the Allegany Mountains in the States of the Ohio Kentucky and Tennessee in the Year 1802. Bradford 3461. Clark II:106. Hubach p.38. Meisel III:365-66. Monaghan 1063. Sabin 48704. Thomson 822. Three editions of Michaux's Travels were published in London in 1805. This edition is heavily abridged. Michaux was commissioned by the French government in 1801 to sell his father's tree plantations in Charleston. His journey lasted from August 1801 until March 1803 during which time he travelled extensively throughout the eastern central and southern U.S. Among his stops were Lexington and the horse farms of Kentucky; Nashville and Jonesborough Tennessee; Morganton North Carolina; and Chester Columbia and finally Charleston South Carolina. He comments heavily on the flora and fauna of Georgia and the Carolinas as well as on the health of the cotton and tobacco trades. A highly interesting account of a journey during which the author compiled much information for his later work The North American Sylva. The large very detailed map affords an excellent view of the East Coast Southeast and Midwest at the time. unknown
