Mawman 1805. 1st ed. in English. xvi 350pp. Folding map frontis. Circa 1900 paper covered boards with paper spine and printed paper spine label. Bookplate of former owner else a near fine copy. Howes M-579. Clark II 106. Graff 2780. Three editions of Michaux's Travels were published in London in 1805. The present edition translated by B. Lambert and published by J. Mawman is the scarcest and much preferred of the three. Michaux 1770-1855 the son of famed French botanist Andre Michaux 1746-1802 was commissioned by the French government to sell his father's tree plantations in Charleston and to continue the botanical travels in the United States that his father had undertaken in the 1780s with a teenage Francois in tow. His journey lasted from August 1801 until March 1803 during which time he travelled extensively throughout the eastern central and southern US Among his stops were Lexington and the horse farms of Kentucky; Nashville and Jonesborough Tennessee; Morganton North Carolina; and Chester Columbia and finally Charleston South Carolina. He comments heavily on the flora and fauna of Georgia and the Carolinas as well as on the health of the cotton and tobacco trades. A highly interesting account of a journey during which the author compiled much information for his later work The North American Sylva Paris 1810-1813. unknown

A pristine untrimmed copy of the first book by the author of the "North American Sylva" in period mustard colored laid papered boards.

Francois Michaux made an 1800-mile journey made through the Eastern United States following in the footsteps of his father Andre who was on the Baudin voyage to Australia in 1800. "Michaux began to seek an opportunity to continue his father's work in North America. he sailed for America and arrived at Charleston South Carolina on 9 October 1801. He had been instructed to close down the nursery founded by his father at Charleston for economic reasons and he sent back to France those seedlings he thought worthy of cultivation. In the spring of 1802 Michaux toured the forests of New Jersey with David Hosack and also visited Hosack's newly established Elgin Botanic Garden in New York. From there he made an extended visit to Philadelphia where he met William Bartram and saw William Hamilton's fine collection of trees at Woodlands. He then made a journey through Pennsylvania Kentucky and Tennessee before returning to Carolina and he met on the way many of his father's old acquaintances. He returned to France at the end of 1803 to organize the shipments of plants and seeds that he had sent back and to make a series of reports on his work. Clearly by then he had formed the idea of producing a major work on the trees of North America" Ian MacPhail for ADNB. Michaux's work was based on his extensive travels in the eastern half of America and those of his father from the 1790s on. Both men were friendly with Jefferson and other leading figures who aided them in their work and travels. His book was first published with a Philadelphia imprint in 1817-19 although actually printed in Paris where the plates were engraved as well. These plates were executed by the great French flower painters Redoute and his associate Bessa. The sheets of the first effort at reprinting were destroyed by fire but the copper plates were separately stored and survived to be employed in this edition where the work of Michaux fills the first three volumes. Thomas Nuttall was one of the most intrepid American naturalists of his day traveling extensively in the Mississippi Valley and the Far West in 1820s and 1830s to gather botanical specimens. Histoire des Chênes de l'Amerique ou Descriptions et Figures de toutes les espèces et variétés de Chênes de l'Amérique Septentrionale Considérées sous les rapports de la Botanique de leur culture et de leur usage. 4 7 49 pp. 36 leaves of engraved plates 32 after Pierre Joseph Redouté and 4 by Henri-Joseph Redouté. Folio 460 x 300 mm bound in original boards with purple linen spine in a new cloth folding box. Paris: l'Imprimerie de Crapelet 1801. First Edition. A splendid work on American oak trees illustrated with engravings by Joseph Redouté and his brother Henri-Joseph. André Michaux is not to be confused with his son Francois André Michaux the author of The North American Sylva which is considered the most important early work on American trees. André originally came to America in 1785 as Royal botanist under Louis XVI where he undertook extensive travels doing research on behalf of the king. After the Revolution he was asked to undertake a Western expedition by Jefferson and it is presumably from this and his previous travels that the information in this book was collected. The Redouté brothers provide and elegance to Michaux's work with engravings displaying both depth and texture to the botanical subject matter. The linen spine is fraying and there is occasional foxing and staining which is pretty much confined to the margins however this is a nevertheless a very good copy of a rare book of which there has been no copy at auction since 2004.
