The first English edition was published in London in 1805 with a second edition and an abridged edition following the same year. An excellent account of Francois A. An abridgement of the second English edition translated from the original French of this classic travel narrative by one of the great early naturalists to work in America later famous for his work on trees. Michaux left France for America in 1801 and travelled through South Carolina New York Ohio Kentucky Pennsylvania and Tennessee returning to France in 1803. The map is noteworthy for locating the proposed states of "Franklinia" and "Morgania" to the east and west of Tennessee respectively and for showing the routes of a number of western roads. He gave his countrymen a correct and impressive idea of the products and promise of the great West but more specifically of Ohio and Kentucky" Thomson. There were three editions in 1805; this one was translated and condensed and appeared in vol.1 of Richard Phillips massive work "Analyses of New Voyages and Travels" published in London in the early part of the 19th century.
