18577348<p>Full dark brown morocco with embossed decoration to boards 5 raised bands with debossed decoration and gilt particulars to spine. All edges gilt. Stated in the preface to this edition: "The whole of the sheets of the last imprint were destroyed by a fire at the bindery wither they had been sent for collation; but fortunately the French copper-plates were in another building. This has enabled the new publishers to issue the work in a much improved style and has allowed for opportunity for additional notes and remarks." Michaux's volumes contain 156 hand colored plates all protected with tissue guards; and Nuttall's volumes contain 121 hand colored plates also protected with tissue guards. Nuttall's title: "The North American Sylva. and Nova Scotia not described in the work of F. Andrew Michaux and containing all the forest trees discovered in the Rocky Mountains the territory of Oregon down to the shores of the Pacific and into the confines of California as well as in various parts of the United States." With 236 fine hand-colored plates both engravings and lithographs each with a tissue guard. Bound in half dark green morocco spine with five raised bands lettered in gilt in two compartments covers have a large gilt-stamped botany illustration in gold on both the front and rear covers antique marbled endpapers top edge gilt lg 8vo 10 1/2 x 6 3/4 inches. The first volume of Michaux covers pines and firs walnut and hickories the second volume presents 20 different oaks with maples birches beeches chestnuts and nyssas among other groups and the third volume documents the magnolias along with ribinias the tulip tree the catalpa and others. The Volumes II and III of the Nuttall volumes this set lacks Volume I cover trees left out of Michaux as well adding descriptions of trees from Oregon California and the Rocky Mountains where Michaux did not explore and collect. The first combined edition of Michaux and Nuttall was completed in 1849 just five years before this current issue was published. Sabin commented on the combined edition: 'Of the two works united it is no exaggeration to remark that it is the most complete work of its kind and is a production of unrivaled interest and beauty giving descriptions and illustrations of all the forest trees of North America from the arctic limits of arborescent vegetation to the confines of the tropical circle.' Illustrated with lovely colored engravings: Vol. I Plates 1-50; Vol. III Plates 101-156; Nuttall Vol. II Plates XLI-LXXX and Nuttall Vol. III Plates LXXXI-CXXI. . All four volumes bear the intriguing 19th c. inscription: "Confiscated from John Taylor of Fleetwood Virginia and presented to John Blakeslee by his friend J. Washbourne."
