The 1839 London translation of Merimee's book originally published in French in 1830. Cloth spotted and unevenly sunned on the upper board; inner hinged neatly mended; else a very good copy. Laid in is a signed autograph letter c. 1864 from the author likely to his close friend and fellow polymath Francisque Michel 1809-1887 now best remembered for his contributions to medieval studies especially for being the first editor of the Chanson de Roland. In the letter Mérimée discusses a legal matter apparently connected to accusations of sexual misconduct. 4to. In original wraps as issued. Ces ballades, attribuées au musicien-poète Hyacinthe Maglanovitch, sont censées fixer un folklore "Illyrien" mais la part d'invention de Mérimée semble évidente dès la présentation burlesque de la vie de ce troubadour des Balkans ! On y trouve notamment le fameux chapitre "Sur le vampirisme" et la chanson de Cara-Ali le vampire. Quelques rousseurs, sinon charmant exemplaire en reliure d'époque, avec ex-libris gravé.
