In uniform calf bindings signed Sotheran & Co. Prize binding with bookplate to front pastedown dated 1916. Complete in two volumes. With half titles. Containing the letters of Prosper Merimee in the original French originally published posthumously to the author's death in 1873 in several volumes. Most of these letters are addressed to Jenny Dacquin with whom the Merimee had a relationship by correspondence from 1831. Prosper Merimee was a Romantic French author one of the pioneers of the novella and noted archaeologist and historian. He is best known for his novella 'Carmen' which became the basis of Bizet's opera 'Carmen.' In uniform full calf bindings signed Sotheran with five raised bands gilt tooling to spine and extremities gilt to edges marbled endpapers.
