Prosper Merimee 1809-1870 was a French Romantic author who first published this historical novel in 1829 which was set in 16th century France. Translated by George Saintsbury. Contains 110 illustrations after engravings on wood by Edouard Toudouze. This is a large format book in the original publisher's green cloth binding with gilt spine lettering and a gilt illustration on the cover depicting two men dueling with swords. There is some light rubbing to a portion of the rear cover shelf wear to the bottom edges & spine ends and a couple of light smudge marks to the front preliminary blank leaf else this is a nice book which is tight clean and unmarked; no previous owner names or bookplates. Printed by the Chisweck Press London for Cassell in New York. No date but probably 1890. Fiction about Charles IX King of France from 1550 - 1574. ; B&W Illustrations; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 309 pages .
