Les 25 planches illustrées par Victor Adam, lithographiées chez Bernard et Frey, présentent pour chaque lettre de l'alphabet trois illustrations finement détaillées dont les deux premières représentent une syllabe de la charade, et la troisième le mot à deviner dans son entier (sauf les planches X, Y et Z, simplement illustrées de personnages formant les lettres avec leur corps), le tout dans un encadrement orné avec en tête un médaillon pour la lettre à l'honneur ; petits défauts d'usage du à la conservation en brochure d'origine, par ailleurs bel exemplaire et très belle impression. Includes some animals not typically found in such books: "N is a Nyl Ghau Half ox and half deer; On the far plains of Hindostan He roams without fear"; "J is a Jaguar A Brazilian beast; On the flesh of wild deer He loves well to feast"; "P is a Prongbuck On the western plain He flies o'er the ground Like a ship on the main"; and our favorite "V is a Vampire A bloodsucking bat. He's as large as a pigeon And bites like a rat". Red blindstamped cloth with gilt lettered and decorated spine with Young People's Library at the top includes woodcut frontis and title page in addition to the animal woodcuts plus four additional title pages with three frontis woodcuts for different titles at the rear all dated 1860 presumably publisher's ads.
