Printed paper label on front fixed endpaper for bookseller Louis-Guillaume Labottiere Bordeaux. In an old hand on title page: "ex libris Congregationis Missionis domus Burdigalensis Catalogo inscriptus." Short inscription on front fixed endpaper. The author Pierre Collet 1693-1770 wrote this biography following the beatification in 1729 and canonization in 1737 of St. Vincent de Paul 1581-1660. It was first published anonymously in 1748; in this somewhat abridged version it became very popular. In Very Good- Condition: leather rubbed with minor loss at tail of spine; corners heavily rubbed; lower corners bumped; some loss of gilt on spine; faint dampstain at upper page corners; otherwise clean and tight. Fose Jr. and "the celebrated Dr. Archibald Cameron". Archibald Cameron of Lochiel 17077 June 1753 was a doctor and a prominent leader in the Jacobite rising of 1745. On 7 June 1753 at Tyburn he was the last Jacobite to be executed for high treason. <br/><br/>Attributed to Dionysius Halicarnassus and Cassius Longinus altho probably by neither man. It is a classical treatise on aesthetics and the effects of good writing written as a series of epistles. A bi-lingual edition with Greek and Latin. 17704095Paris: Chez Lotlin/Chez La Combe 1770. Hardcover. Good. Instructions for Lords and their Valets". Possibly a 1st edition; the 'Approbation' is dated 1769. This is extremely scarce; we haven't heard of another copy. I had no luck finding the identity of Monsieur "R" but I don't read French. Good plus in a very old binding possibly contemporary. Full leather finished with a marbling effect boards slt. bowed gilt borders gilt title and many devices on spine marbled endpapers red chalk edges. Corners worn and bumped spine ends worn external front hinge weak so that leather is beginning to split. 2" near the top. The text has been trimmed for the binding but the margins were quite large. The tail of a trimmed-off owner's name appears at the top of the title page. The 18th-century marbled paper is quite beautiful; the binder was a bit clumsy and there are creases in both pastedowns. A splay of foxing on the half-title page but nowhere else. Text pages in French very clean and bright. Printed by Lottin one of the more prolific publishers of 18th-century France. 278 pp. An interesting guide to recommended behavior published just 19 years before the Revolution. <br/> <br/> Chez Lotlin/Chez La Combe hardcover

Front free endpaper bears former owner inscriptions in German script indicating that Joseph Laross purchased the book in 1821 for $12 and sold it to Isaac Schelhammer in 1828. Both a Joseph Laross and an Isaac Schelhammer were Pennsylvania residents in this period indicating that this volume had entered the American book market. Volume contains both the first and second parts of the first volume. Pagination is continuous. The title page for part one specifies "Erster Theil welcher die drey ersten Jahrhunderte enthält" and that for part two notes "Zweyter Theil welcher das vierte bis auf das siebende Jahrhundert enthält." Wood-engraved tail pieces. In Very Good- Condition: rubbed with slight loss of leather at ends of spine; front joint separating from head of spine for 7 cm.; a few page corners are creased; pages are clean and tight.
