Ahmet Vefik Pasha was a famous Ottoman statesman, diplomat, playwright and translator of the Tanzimat period. He was commissioned with top-rank governmental duties, including presiding over the first Ottoman parliament. He also became a grand vizier for two brief periods. Vefik also established the first Ottoman theatre and initiated the first Western style theater plays in Bursa and translated Molière's major works.

Herausgegeben von Richard Hartmann). Gabain was a German scholar who dealt with Turkic studies, both as a linguist and as an art historian. She took courses on mathematics, sciences, Sinology and Turcology. She completed a dissertation in Sinology. Von Gabain then studied Turcology with Johann Wilhelm Bang Kaup who is the founder of the Berlin school of Turkic studies. Later, she began to work on the Old Turkic materials kept at the Academy of Sciences in Berlin. This work is the most important work in the field of Old Turkish and Uighur Turkish by Gabain.
