1938674
Philadelphia: Macrae-Smith-Company 1938. First Edition.

Octavo 8 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches; 210 x 145 mm 268 pages in yellow cloth with a pictorial dust jacket.

An unusual book aimed at guys who want to go from copy boy to ace reporter. Unusual in the sense that it combines both fiction and nonfiction. We follow Jerry a likable copy boy on a New Jersey daily who puts up with coarse and frankly awful editors and pressmen but then gets his big chance to be a reporter.

Journalists will enjoy the depiction of Matt Hale the city editor who communicates primarily through growling screaming and banging his fist on his desk. Very entertaining; most journalists have known editors like Matt Hale. Illustrated with real newsroom and technical photographs of the day. SCARCE especially in dust jacket.

CONDITION: Light toning to page edges heavier toning to paste downs but clean and unmarked. The pictorial dust jacket has several shallow chips and tears including a 1 1/2" tear with creasing to top edge of front panel affecting "O" in "COPY." Overall a Very Good copy.
Macrae-Smith-Company hardcover

1950226371950. Japanese-American Linguistics Illustrated children's schoolbook for first-year students. N.d. presumably 1950s-60s. Honolulu: Hawaii Kyoiku Kai. Printed in Japan. Text in Japanese hiragana and furigana. Brightly illustrated. Original pictorial wrappers 8vo.

This scarce Japanese-language primer was issued for Nisei and Sansei children in Hawaii part of the broader effort by Japanese immigrant communities to preserve language and culture while integrating into American public education. The cover features two smiling children in school attire beneath the title ã«ã£ã½ã‚“ã”ã®ã»ã‚“ which translates to "Japanese Language Book". Inside the book pairs simple hiragana lessons with vivid illustrations: classroom scenes where students read aloud to a teacher animal fables such as the tortoise and the hare and playful counting games with ducks and other figures indicating its use as a beginner's textbook. Produced in Hawaii for the Japanese American community this type of primer was central to immigrant identity formation allowing children of plantation workers and postwar families to retain linguistic ties to Japan even while assimilating into English-language schooling. The illustrations reflect the hybridity of the immigrant experience by mixing Japanese fables with Western-style classrooms and dress. Wear and chipping to cover edges scattered child's pencil writing and some toning to interior otherwise pages and illustrations clean. Binding is tight though semi fragile. Overall good condition. A scarce surviving example of a Hawaiian Japanese-language school primer documenting the cultural persistence and adaptation of Japanese immigrant families in mid-century America. unknown
