In 1933 his books were burnt by the Third Reich as "contrary to the German spirit." In 1960 he received the Hans Christian Andersen Award for his lifetime contributions to children's literature. Kirwan defended the theory of phlogiston a now disproved scientific theory that had posited the existence of an element called "phlogiston" which was released during combustion.
