Very light shelfwear else fine.; Institute of Classical Studies Bulletin Supplement 97; 193 pages; The new millennium sees both Pliny the Elder and his massive encyclopaedic Natural History being studied more seriously and holistically than at any time in the preceding century. The essays in this volume which honour the seminal work of Barbara Levick on the politics and society of imperial Rome above all in the period of Pliny’s life and literary activity further this re-assessment. They consider aspects of Pliny’s life and output which have not so far received serious attention. These include his value as a source for the kings of Rome and their achievements; his attitude to astronomy and natural wonders to gentilician commemoration philosophical sects Roman dress and coinage; and his moral judgements on the fall of the Republic. The essays consider the ideological climate of the Flavian period as reflected not only in Pliny’s attitude to the past but in his construction of Rome and Italy and his relationship to contemporary writers like Licinius Mucianus. Pliny emerges clearly as a major literary and cultural figure of the early Empire. . 1905670141 . Institute of Classical Studies paperback

Ex-library copy with usual stamps call numbers and pocket.; Reprint of the 2nd edition; Anglistica & Americana; 1735. Blackwell a Scottish classical scholar first published this work anonymously. The work was intended to explain the causes of the superiority of Homer to all the poets who preceded or followed him. It shows considerable research and contains many curious and interesting details but its want of method made Bentley say that when he had gone through half of it he had forgotten the beginning and when he had finished the reading of it he had forgotten the whole. . 3487060027 . 17274204Stockholm Und Leipzig: Berlegis Johann Heinrich Russworm 1727. Hardcover. Good. Jesus Christ's Wholesome Reconciliation for Sinful Mankind. Sermons by a popular preacher at the time though I have found out very little about him. This is a remarkable and very rare book consisting of 3 large parts paginated separately; 660 535 416 pp. an index for all 3 parts which is 50 or more pp. long. All are bound together in a massive tome of unadorned vellum in good-only condition; the front board is warping beginning to split at the bottom near the spine; vellum soiled and the page edges have turned very dark. May have been rebound some time long ago; the endpapers are thicker than the text pages though they are laid paper; and the headbands are remarkably whole and unworn. The binding is quite tight. Front pastedown is marred with a few odd probably recent stains. Text pages are darkened to a deep cream but are free of foxing and quite legible if you can read the German Fraktur typeface. Has a frontispiece portrait probably of the author with a caption in Latin. Title page in red and black and has a complex woodcut vignette which I think is a publisher's device.

Berlegis Johann Heinrich Russworm hardcover

199533577E. J. Brill. 1995. Hardcover. Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket. Minor creasing and edgewear to DJ. Very light wear to book.; Religions in the Graeco-Roman World; 473 pages; The Early Amazons offers a new understanding of the ancient Amazon myth situating mythical representations in the realm of cultural history. The first section examines how the Amazons have presented a challenge to views on history myth and gender in classical mythology from the late eighteenth century up to the impact of structuralism. Topics included are nineteenth-century historiography and the interest in linguistics. The second section sheds new light on the culture of archaic Greece offering a coherent assessment of literary and visual representations. Taking mythical narrative as a form of oral storytelling it shows the emergence of the Amazon motif and its meaning in the world of epic. Iconographical analysis reveals how the visual arts have made a contribution of their own to the imaginary presence of the Amazons. . 9004100776 . E. J. Brill hardcover
