1890LIST110Havana: R. Testar 1890. Albumen photograph on cardstock mount image measuring 7 1/4 x 4 1/2 inches on 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inch mount. A view of an American warship in Havana harbor likely taken prior to the outbreak of hostilities between the United States and Spain in early 1898. The photographers Leach and Patterson of Calle San Rafael published several views of Cuba at this time mostly of bucolic scenes around Havana and its environs. The American cruiser is similar in design to the U.S.S. Maine with slight differences - two smokestacks instead of three. An excellent example with minor wear to mount and fine image. R. Boards scuffed and worn joints splitting cracking to paper over spine bookplate to pastedown of first volume scattered foxing stain to upper spine corner of last 20 or so pages in 4th volume. A rare full-margined copy in original boards. <br/><br/>The masterwork of the Spanish priest and historian Juan Antonio Llorente 1756-1823. At time of publication Llorente had been living in France for a number of years - having identified with the French Bonaparte when the alliance between Spain and France collapsed in 1808. Very good. - A 10-1/8 inch high by 5-3/8 inch wide broadsheet playbill for the Boston performance of the "French Spy or - The Fall of Algiers" starring Isabella Cubas. The credits with her name are boldly printed on the top third of the sheet followed by an overlay boldly titled with the name of the play "The French Spy" printed on 2-3/8 inch high by 5-3/8 inch wide sheet followed by a list of the cast and concluding with the opening play "To commence with the Laughable Farce entitled Somebody Else!" This overlay is tipped over the title of another performance by Isabella Cubas "Queen of Pantomimists and Unrivaled Danseuse" in her "Third Appearance in the Unparalleled Representation of Protean Character supported by the company and auxiliaries. New Scenery and Appointments! New Dances Marches &c." Another overlay listing the prices of admission printed on 1-1/2 inch high by 5-3/8 inch wide paper is tipped over the title of the farce. The playbill is mounted onto heavier 10-5/8 inch high by 7-1/8 inch wide cream stock. There is some minor darkening and soiling. Very good.</p><p>The Spanish ballerina danseuse and pantomimist Isabella Cubas 1831-1864 performed as a soloist in Madrid when she was 13 years old. Having appeared in prominent Spanish theaters and performed in Turin and Milan before she was 20 she was honored by Emperor Francis Joseph and his court at the Gello and Teatro San Benedetto. She then toured Venice Bucharest Odessa Alexandria Cairo Brussels Paris and London. She joined Ambrogio Martinez's Spanish Dance Company at the Royal Theater of Madrid and was the prima ballerina assoluta at the Naum Theatre in Istanbul. Following appearances at most of Europes' top opera houses she made her debut in Canada and performed in New York and Philadelphia before touring America with a full corps de ballet. She first decided to attempt pantomime acting performing in The French Spy at Nixon's Cremorne Garden on October 6 1862. Quarto 11pp. Spirited defence of freedom of the press critical of infringements that were being made by the restored crown of Ferdinand VII of laws that had been passed by the Spanish Cortes parliament during the liberal period during and right after the Napoleonic invasion. One of these infringements was the restriction of the press. Though it is anonymous the author signs himself "El Espanol imparcial" and a close reading indicates that he was probably living in Mexico. From an argument for a free press he ends up proposing independence for the American possessions. Not in Medina; Palau 19237: OCLC list 5 libraries with holdings. Published seventeen years after the tenth edition the eleventh edition is the removal of Latin entries for words that could prove misleading to the reader and were often incorrect. This was especially the case for newer words that did not have a Latin origin. In full decorative calf. Externally very smart with clean boards. Minor shelfwear to the extremities and very slight rubbing to the head and tail of the spine. Spine embellishments and label in excellent condition. Marble end papers are bright and clean with wear to the hinge of the front end papers. Internally firmly bound with minor wear to binding of leaves pp.315-318. Pages are bright and clean. Folio 31 cm 12.5". 1 2 3 pp. <br><br>Each facsimile has this note on it: "Photographed from the original preserved in the 'Archivo General de Indias' de Sevilla under Royal Order dated Madrid December 26th 1883 for Aldoph Sutro Esq. of San Francisco California" and the typographic imprint above.<br>Â Â Â Â One is a letter of Junipero Serra dated Monterey 7 October 1779 reporting that he has made a copy of Fr. Crespi's diary and is sending it via the ship that has just arrived; a second Serra letter dated Monterey 9 September 1779 reports on the various missions and states that he hopes to establish one in San Francisco. The third letter is by Sebastian Vizcaino dated Monterey 8 December 1602 reporting on his voyage of discovery along the California coast.<br>Â Â Â Â The facsimiles are on laid paper and in sepia ink and are great replicas of the originals with a great backstory as to their creation.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Adolph Sutro; later for sale by E. B. Sterling Historical Print Seller Trenton NJ 18511925. Overall very good: Some age stains one corner repaired some dust-soiling. In a light paper folder with E.B. Sterling's faint rubber-stamp. Exterior shows some spotting and toning with the worst issue is some tears around the spine edges. The top has a tear of about an inch the bottom has a larger tear along the spine edge that measures about 3 inches on the front cover with a smaller tear on the back. The string held binding is still intact in the pages are clean with the exception of some light foxing. There are no signatures or bookplates no handwriting no library markings none of the interior text pages have tears. This is a very rare government publication in the only date present is on the last page which states October 1879. <br/> <br/> Government Printing Office paperback
